Helenio Herrera, 110 years since his birth

MILAN – Two years, one month and one day after Inter’s foundation, Helenio Herrera was born in Buenos Aires. It was 10 April 1910, exactly 110 years ago to the day, when the man who would go on to lead the Grande Inter and write unforgettable pages in Nerazzurri history began his journey in the world, a journey full of achievements, great work and an innate passion for football.

Herrera arrived at Inter after winning four titles in Spain, two with Atletico Madrid and two with Barcelona, and with the intention of bringing his footballing vision to Angelo Moratti’s Club. With his arrival, at first the pitches at the Idroscalo and then those at Pinetina became the scene for a footballing revolution: new training methods and playing techniques brought by a communicating coach, close to the players on the pitch but also off it, with encouragement and advice to use one’s mind first, then one’s feet, because only this way do great players become champions.

The strength of The Wizard’s revolution was in understanding how to transmit his winning personality into his players, who then created his Grande Inter. His dedication was to his team, his meticulous work became the root of an extraordinary journey that resulted in three league titles, in ’63, ’65 and ’66, two Champions Cups, in ’64 and ’65, and two Intercontinental Cups.
