Our new '10 Number 10s' episode is now available: the incredible Dutchman takes centre stage

MILAN – For many, he was the ‘Non-Flying Dutchman’. But despite his fear of flying, Dennis Bergkamp knew how to reach great heights. Blessed with an abundance of class, he ended up flying above everyone. He was 24 when he arrived in Italy alongside another Dutchman, Wim Jonk. It wasn’t easy for him to adapt to his new surroundings, but the number 10 on his shoulders was the perfect fit for him. It was as perfect as a certain UEFA Cup campaign that he enjoyed during a year where Inter struggled in the league.

It was the 1993/94 season, and, while the Nerazzurri were hitting many stumbling blocks in the league, Dennis was leading from the front in Europe, proving himself to be an absolute champion. His acrobatic volley against Rapid Bucharest was pure art, a sublime brushstroke. But it wasn’t the only goal he scored in the competition that year: he’d go on to bag eight as Inter eventually won the trophy thanks to their two-legged triumph over Salzburg in the final.

The Nerazzurri fans were able to enjoy Dennis Bergkamp in action for two seasons before he joined Arsenal, where he wrote more legendary chapters. His wonderful touches, magnificent goals and the ease with which he was able to amaze meant that he left an indelible mark on Inter’s history.
