The Belgian forward was one of three finalists and was chosen today by UEFA

MILAN -Romelu Lukaku is the Europa League player of the 2019/20 season. The Belgian forward ended the season with 34 goals scored in 51 appearances, setting a number of records. He has beaten off competition from two other finalists- Bruno Fernandes, the top scorer of the tournament and Ever Banega selected from a panel composed from coaches of the 48 clubs present in the group stage and from 55 journalists chosen from the European Sports Media (ESM) group- one for each of the UEFA federations.

The winner was revealed during the draw for the 2020/21 Europa League season and the prize went to the Nerazzurri’s number 9 that via video link thanked everyone that had enabled him to earn himself another important award at the end of an impressive season. “First of all I thank God for having allowed me to come this far, for doing a job that I love, to play for a team that I have loved since I was a child. I want to congratulate Sevilla on the achievement. I thank my mum, my brother, all those close to me, my agent, Roc Nation Sports for their support. I want to thank Antonio Conte, all his staff and all those who work for the Club, the President Steven Zhang for the faith that they had in me and for having helped me this season and finally I want to thank all my team mates, who to me are like brothers, we are a true family. Every day when I go to training, I do it with a smile and it’s because there are those who help me to work hard, to give my absolute best, so thank you guys for all that you do for me and I hope that this year we will do even better than last season and that we will share many successes together. Thank you everyone!”

Six appearances, 443 minutes played, seven goals scored and two assists. These are the numbers from Lukaku’s Europa League season in 2019/20. Inter’s top goalscorer from the season just gone, Lukaku set various club records, including the highest number of goals scored by an Inter player in a single season in Europe (9 - level with Roberto Boninsegna 1969/70 and Hernan Crespo in 2002/03), and the record for consecutive games with a goal in the UEFA Cup/Europa League (11), beating Alan Shearer (eight in 2005 with Newcastle).

He is the Europa League player of the season 2019/20.
