Read what the Nerazzurri coach had to say ahead of Lecce vs. Inter

APPIANO GENTILE – After their win over Cagliari in the Round of 16 of the Coppa Italia, Inter are preparing to take on Lecce at the Via del Mare stadium on matchday 20 of Serie A. Ahead of the first game of the second round of fixtures, the Nerazzurri Coach met with journalists in the press room at the Suning Training Centre: “Lecce are on their own course, they’re here to fight, not to be relegated, they’ve played really well in some games, they try to play good football. If the league was over, they would be safe, they would’ve achieved their objective. They have a good coach, a good team which plays positive attacking football, I wish them the best, after the match against us. Going back to Lecce is always a great feeling for me, it’s the city where I was born and grew up, it’s always special going back to the Via del Mare, but tomorrow we will be opponents and we will both be trying to beat each other.”

On the attitude going forwards into the second round of fixtures, starting with Lecce: “Nothing is a given in this match, it’s the first game of the second round, we need to have the same determination that we had in the first games, the same concentration. We’re facing a team who are keen to get more points, that are playing at home, so we’ll need to be very focused. I’m always asking for signs of concreteness and I’m expecting the same again tomorrow. I expect the same willingness, the same concentration and the same attitude that the players had at the start of the season, I expect that we will resume in this fashion. Repeating what we’ve done won’t be easy, it will be very difficult, what we can do is train even more and go about what we do with the same enthusiasm, the same desire and the same attitude, this is important.”

On yesterday’s announcement of Ashley Young: “He’s a super experienced player, he’s 34 years old and he’s had a great career. At United he sometimes played on the left and sometimes on the right, he’s a flexible player who started off as a winger but became a fullback, he played as a five many times when United went with a back three. He’s a reliable player and we need reliable players. Given the role the tactical difficulties will be practically zero, he has the characteristics to do well and he arrived with great enthusiasm.”

On the possibility of him playing: “Young has just arrived, this is a team which has been working for six months on the mechanisms both in and out of possession. He’ll train today, tomorrow and next week we’ll start to get an idea of how he’s training with us. He’ll be available for the next home game against Cagliari.”

Lastly on the transfer market: “This is the most difficult period for us coaches because we need to manage many situations on the pitch which go out to the journalists. We need to trust in the skill and the professionalism of the players to remain concentrated, to think that they are playing for the team without getting dragged into other situations that could cause them to lose concentration.”
