Lukaku, tears of joy: "Thinking of my grandparents"

MILAN – On a day of celebration, Romelu Lukaku couldn’t hold back the tears. After also scoring against Udinese, the Belgian striker lifted the trophy while wearing a special t-shirt with the words ‘Forever in my heart, I love you and I miss you’ written on the front. The photo and the names are of his grandparents. “I didn’t want to cry today,” said Romelu. “The photo is of my grandparents, I’ve thought a lot about them. When my grandfather passed away in 2005, I promised him that I’d win something. I’ve now done that and am proud.”

It’s a great Scudetto triumph: “I’ve thought about this season a lot, it’s been a great one. We’ve worked so hard to win after going close last year. We’ve taken a step forward in terms of growth, and I really am proud to wear these colours.

“I hope that this is the start of a cycle, even if my attentions are now turning towards the European Championship. When we come back, we’ll need to be even stronger than we were this year.”

The Belgian finished his season with his 24th goal of the season in Serie A, even if it was fortuitous: “We produced another great performance today, I’m happy with everything.”
