The Azzurri reach the summit of European football by beating England on penalties

It was a magical night for all Italians at Wembley, with the Inter family celebrating, in particular, on behalf of newly crowned European champions Nicolo Barella and Alessandro Bastoni. In unforgettable circumstances, Italy ran out European Championship winners for the first time since the country’s only previous success in 1968.

It ended up being decided on penalties at Wembley for Roberto Mancini’s charges, after a 1-1 draw in which Luke Shaw opened the scoring for England, only for Leonardo Bonucci to draw Italy level in the second half. Andrea Belotti and Jorginho failed to convert their spot kicks, but the Azzurri sealed victory thanks to a trio of England penalty misses by Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka.

Barella started the final and was withdrawn in the 54th minute, while Bastoni was an unused substitute on a night of celebration for Inter and Italy
