Your pre-match guide to Wednesday's Champions League Group D encounter in Tiraspol

Inter are back in Champions League action on Wednesday when they visit Sheriff Tiraspol for their Matchday 4 clash. The game kicks off at 21:00 CET (22:00 local time).

The Nerazzurri head into the game after beating the Moldovans 3-1 in the reverse fixture at San Siro. After three group matches Sheriff and Real Madrid are joint top on six points followed by Inter on four and Shakhtar on one.

Inter will take the field in Tiraspol already knowing the result of Real Madrid v Shakhtar Donetsk, which kicks off at the Bernabeu at 18:45 CET.

Inter lost their opening group game to Real then drew with Shakhtar in Kyiv and defeated Sheriff last time out.

Sheriff meanwhile surprised everyone by beating first Shakhtar and then Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, before succumbing to Inter.

FORM BOOK

Inter won their last two Serie A games 2-0, against Empoli and Udinese, and currently sit seven points behind joint leaders Napoli and AC Milan.

Sheriff are unbeaten in their last 11 league outings. They lie in third place, three points before the top two, but have three games in hand.

FACTS AND FIGURES

Inter are making their first ever trip to Moldova.

Sheriff's Macedonian midfielder Boban Nikolov spent the second half of the 2020/21 season in Italy on loan at Lecce, making 13 Serie B appearances.

Brazil-born Sheriff defender Fernando Costanza holds Italian citizenship.

Dimitris Kolovos and Edin Dzeko have faced off before. The Greek midfielder scored in the 2-2 draw between Greece and Bosnia-Herzegovina in a EURO 2020 qualifier on 26 March 2019.

Italian coach Roberto Bordin was in charge of Sheriff from 2016 al 2018. During his time there he won two league titles, the 2016/17 Moldovan Cup and took the team to the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League group stage. He is now the head coach of the Moldova national team.

Sheriff didn't field a single Moldovan player in their first two Champions League Group D fixtures but had three in their third game: Dumitru Celeadnic, Serafim Cojocari and Maxim Cojocaru (the last two as subs).

Before this season, no Sheriff player had ever featured in the UEFA Champions League (group stage to the final). Fifteen made their competition bow in Matchday 1, while Keston Julien (Matchday 2) and the aforementioned Celeadnic, Cojocari and Cojocaru (Matchday 3) have made theirs since then.
