Mancini’s side could only muster a 0-0 draw in Belfast, with Switzerland securing automatic qualification

It was a disappointing evening for the European champions, who failed to pick up the win required to secure a place at the 2022 World Cup, leaving Roberto Mancini’s side with a crucial play-off to contest in March next year.

Nicolo Barella started the goalless stalemate against Northern Ireland before being replaced by Andrea Belotti with 64 minutes on the clock.

Italy finished second in Group C on 16 points behind Switzerland, whose 18-point tally was enough to book their place in Qatar next year.
