Inter rounded off the year in style with a win against Torino to head into 2022 top of the pile

Inter’s win against Torino capped off a year to remember for the Nerazzurri with the defending Italian champions top of the league after the first half of the season having won their 19th Scudetto in May. Simone Inzaghi’s team have picked up 46 points in their first 19 games of this campaign giving them a four-point advantage over AC Milan.

7 WINS ON THE BOUNCE, 6 WITHOUT CONCEDING

The 1-0 win over Torino stretches Inter’s winning streak in the league to seven games. In that time they have beaten Napoli, Venezia, Spezia, Roma, Cagliari, Salernitana and now Torino.  What makes this   winning run so extraordinary is that Inter have not conceded a goal in their last six - the first time this has happened in the same season in Serie A for the Nerazzurri. There is one example of six in a row – the last five games of 2005/05 and then the first match of 2005/06 season.

The last time Samir Handanovic was beaten was by Dries Mertens in the 78th minute of the 3-2 win against Napoli making the Inter keeper unbeaten in 552 minutes of play. Inter’s goal difference from the last six games stands at 17 for and 0 against.

THE INTER GOAL MACHINE

Not only is the defence rock solid; Inter have the best attack in the league with 49 goals. In the last 60 years only one team have scored as many at this point in Serie A: Atalanta in 2019/20.

The Nerazzurri chalked up 104 goals in Serie A in 2021. Only AC Milan (105 in 1949 and 120 in 1950) and Torino (111 in 1947 and 114 in 1947) have done better during a calendar year in the top flight.

Inter have scored in their last 38 Serie A games, the last time they failed to do so was the 0-0 draw against Udinese on 23 January. Since then they’ve gone on to score 93 goals.

VICTORIES AND... SAN SIRO

Throughout 2021 Inter picked up 32 wins in the league. Only one team have won more across one calendar year in the history of Serie A – Juventus in 2016 with 33 victories.

San Siro has also shown itself to be a fortress for the Nerazzurri with 19 home wins in the league this year. Only twice in the competition’s history has this been topped – by Juventus in 2016 (20) and Torino in 1948 (20).

DZEKO AND DUMFRIES BRIGHT IN FRONT OF GOAL

Following his assist for Denzel Dumfries against Torino Edin Dzeko has been involved in 11 goals in 18 games this season (eight goals, three assists), one more than he had a hand in last season for Roma across 27 appearances.

Denzel Dumfries picked up his third goal for the Nerazzurri, all of which came in December – the others being against Roma and Salernitana. Last season in the Netherlands his final tally was just two, while his record is seven in 2019/20. So far in Serie A this campaign he has three goals and two assists from his eight games as a starter.
