This weekend, it is the Derby Della Madonnina. It is a game that shakes the very core of Milan, a game that evokes, passion, pride, intense rivalry and always contains drama. This is more than a football match, this is raw emotion and the choreography and pageantry is only the beginning. This is why, this week, Richard Hall and Thomas Lawrence look at the upcoming fixture with anticipation. They are privileged enough to speak with Massimo Paganin about his thoughts for the coming game and we hear him reminisce about what it is like to score in the Derby. They look back at some of their fondest Derby memories as well as taking questions from some brilliant guests. This is the Derby Della Madonnina podcast, are you ready?

Richard looks back to the Derby in March 1990 where Inter would beat Milan 3-1. This was a game that sits in his childhood as an early memory and it was a display that firmed the belief that this was one of the biggest games in world football. This was a season were Inter would finish third and whilst it was not the season they wanted, it was a campaign that gave the Nerazzurri some good memories. The first Derby Della Madonnina had not gone to plan and there was some element of revenge that sat with the return fixture. Inter were keen to shake off the 3-0 defeat in November in the home fixture and wanted to give the Rossoneri a lesson in front of their own fans.

Aldo Serena was certainly ready for this match as within three minutes he had already scored the opening goal. A long ball forward into the Milanese box at first seemed hasty and without thought, Andrea Pazzagli certainly did not seem concerned and came out to collect the ball, albeit somewhat slowly. Serena saw his opportunity here and decided to challenge the keeper, his leap paid off and he managed to beat Pazzagli to the ball and head home the opener.

It wasn’t going to be Pazzagli’s day as he brought down Serena on the 24th minute and gave away a penalty. Who else but Lothar Matthaus would step up, and slot away the spot kick in front of an ecstatic Curva Nord. Alessandro Costacurta gave Milan hope in a game where there should have been none, when he struck from outside the box with six minutes to go. Walter Zenga felt that there had been an infringement early in the build-up but his dramatic objections fell on deaf ears. Finally, in the 90th minute, Serena would have a say in the game one more time as he would be set free by Nicola Berti. The midfielder slotted the ball through allowing Serena to beat the offside trap and slot home for a definitive third.

Thomas Lawrence will then take you through is greatest derby memory by looking back to a game where he was present in Milan. This is the famous 4-2 come back in February 2020. All Nerazzurri fans will certainly remember the feeling they had when at half time the team walked off the field of play 2-0 down after Ante Rebic and Zlatan Ibrahimovic had put the Rossoneri 2-0 ahead and many thought the game was over.

What happened next was a modern day Inter miracle. The Nerazzurri took the field in the second period with a renewed sense of purpose. Marcelo Brozovic harnessed this belief when the smashed home a delectable volley from outside the box on 51 minutes, there was no stopping Inter now. Two minutes later it was Matias Vecino’s turn as Alexis set him up to turn in the equaliser in front of an ecstatic Curva Nord. Now the momentum shifted and Stefan De Vrij would soon get in on the action. On 70 minutes he connected with a corner and headed in a goal that Jurgen Klinsmann would have been proud of, 2-0 down, 3-2 up. The final indignity for Milan came when Romelu Lukaku show his strength in the 93rd minute and stood fast to head in the final goal of the game. Inter 4-2 Milan was the final score and this was a comeback that won’t be forgotten.
