Borussia Dortmund and Inter have often faced off in UEFA competitions at key moments of the Nerazzurri's history, leaving an incredible legacy. This is the first time that the two teams have met in the Champions League since 2019/20, when they were in the same group.
THE 1964 EUROPEAN CUP SEMI-FINAL
It was all action in the first half. Inter started strongly, netting through Mazzola after just four minutes, but a Brungs brace saw the German outfit take the lead. Corso's goal on 41 minutes saw the Nerazzurri draw level, allowing them to go back to Milano with something to defend. At San Siro two weeks later, Inter wrote one of the most legendary pages in their European history. Mazzola opened the scoring just after the break, and Jair added a second late on. The 2-0 win saw Inter reach their first-ever European Cup final, which they won at the Praterstadion in Vienna by beating Real Madrid, who had Puskás and Di Stefano. The start of the Grande Inter era.
THE 1994 UEFA CUP QUARTER-FINAL
30 years later, Inter returned to Dortmund for another unforgettable European night: the UEFA Cup quarter-final. Wim Jonk was on song, bagging an early brace to set the game on its course. Schulz pulled one back,m but Shalimov netted late on. A big win that opened the way for the Nerazzurri. The return leg at San Siro was hard fought. Borussia won the game thanks to goals from Zorc and Ricken, but Inter held on. Manicone's goal in the 81st minute made the result more tolerable. The Nerazzurri reached the semi-finals and went on to win the final against Salzburg, triumphing in the 1993/94 UEFA Cup.
TWO GAMES IN 2019/20
Inter faced Dortmund once again in the UCL group stage in 2019/20. The Nerazzurri recorded an authoritative 2-0 win at San Siro. Lautaro Martinez opened the scoring, and Antonio Candreva sealed the deal late in the day. A solid performance on home turf. The reverse fixture in Germany was an emotional rollercoaster. Inter started strongly and got out to a two-goal lead thanks to Lautaro Martinez and Vecino. After the break, Dortmund came roaring back and completed the comeback thanks to Hakimi (brace) and Brandt. An intense encounter.
