A crucial win to get the season off to the perfect start: four goals and three points as Inter look to pick up where they left off at the end of last season. The clash with Monza was far from straightforward, with the sides level at 1-1 at the break. But the Nerazzurri showed composure in the second half that made all the difference.
After the match, Nerazzurri head coach Cristian Chivu shared his analysis on his squad's season opener:
“We knew we weren't at our best physically yet, and we're always trying to improve. Credit to our opponents, who caused us problems with their pressing and second balls, where we were slow to react. We wanted to stick to the game plan, but there was a bit of rustiness and urgency, and we lacked technical sharpness both individually and collectively. Taking the lead early in the second half helped us regain our composure and clarity and take control of the game. For me, everyone is a starter depending on their qualities, the opponent, the circumstances, and our physical situation. I'm pleased with how my players have trained during pre-season and with the commitment shown by those who were at the World Cup and returned early. That's the most rewarding thing a coach can see. This is a group of good lads, and a group that has maintained a very high level over the years. I believe in them, and there is still plenty of room for improvement. Thuram is continuing his preparations. He had some problems at the World Cup but made himself available to the team; however, now is not yet the time to put him at risk. We're working to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible. There are nuances and moments that a coach has to understand and respond to accordingly. For me, the person comes before the footballer, so if I can help a player, I will. That applies even to Lautaro Martinez, although he doesn't need much help given his strength and quality: he's Serie A's top scorer, Inter's captain, and the third-highest scorer in the Club's history.”
