Inter emerged victorious at the U-Power Stadium in Monza in the Coppa Italia quarter-final, knocking Torino out with a 2-1 win and booking a place in the semi-finals thanks to goals from Bonny and Diouf. After the final whistle, Cristian Chivu spoke to the media:
“I was pleased with the display, with what the lads put out on the pitch, the energy they maintained in a match like that, and with what we managed to create. It’s normal to dip a little towards the end: after making it 2–1, an opponent can sense the chance of an equaliser and increase the pressure, but I don’t think they caused us any major problems. We’re happy with the win and with progressing to the next round – in the end, what matters is the result, and the objective was achieved. We want to be competitive and continue the good work that we've done so far, and also over the last few years. We move forward with conviction, through hard work, continuing to produce strong performances, knowing that there is always room for improvement. We know who we are up against and we’re aware of the work that has been done in recent months. These are matches that demand energy and intensity – you have to give everything physically. The selections were made based on who had the most energy today, also with an eye on managing January and what February will bring. There were also two players from the Under-23s. I want to congratulate them, but above all the entire youth sector, the people in charge and all the coaches who have worked with them in the past. We’re talking about Cocchi and Kamate, but I could also mention Bovo, Berenbruch, Topalovic and Alexiou, who were on the bench with us. I’d also like to compliment Stefano Vecchi, who is doing a great job with the Under-23s, achieving important results and helping players grow into assets for the first team. A coach and a team can always improve, regardless of whether the transfer market has delivered or not. It’s normal to talk about what a group might need, but not every deal comes off. We’re fine as we are, because we have a strong squad. Our focus is on working hard and continuing to compete, step by step, throughout this season. I’m never worried about having so many fixtures. I like the schedule – I did as a player and I still do now. Ambition is essential at a club like Inter, but it mustn’t turn into obsession, because obsession creates expectations, and expectations create disappointment. We take it one game at a time, working hard to be ready. We have energy and a group of quality players who have shown that they are always ready to respond and do their bit.”
