France came out on top in a heart-pounding quarter-final against Portugal at EURO 2024. Les Bleus are through to the semi-finals after winning on penalties.
The game in Hamburg so both sides go at it hammer and tongs. France and Portugal both had chances but neither team could nudge in front. Saves, shots that went just wide, and brilliant defending saw the tie end goalless after 120 minutes of football; not even extra time was enough to see a goal. France were then perfect from the spot in the shoot-out as Dembelé, Fofana, Koundé, Barcola and Theo Hernandez all slotted their penalties home. Joao Felix's missed third penalty proved costly for the Portuguese.
As such, Inter's Marcus Thuram and Benjamin Pavard are into the semis. The Nerazzurri's forward started on the bench and came on late into normal time before playing all 30 minutes of extra time. The defender, however, remained an unused substitute.
After beating Portugal, Les Bleus will face Spain in what is sure to be a spectacular semi-final in Munich next Tuesday (9 July).
