— 4 hours agoThe Nerazzurri will face the Biancorossi on the first matchday of Serie A 2026/27: the clash is at San Siro on Saturday 22 August at 18:30 CEST
We’re back at San Siro, with last season's Scudetto proudly stitched onto our shirt. The Nerazzurri fans are getting ready to welcome the Italian champions back, as they prepare for their first league game of the season: Serie A 2026/27 underway will get underway with Inter vs Monza, a Lombardy derby that brings back memories of the previous meeting on 19 August 2023, when a Lautaro Martinez brace earned Inter the first three points of their Second Star-winning season. The Brianzoli, back in the top flight after winning the Serie B play-offs, will be Cristian Chivu’s first opponents of the season. The two sides will meet on Saturday 22 August, with kick-off scheduled for 18:30 CEST.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Inter and Monza will meet for the seventh time in Serie A. In the six previous meetings, in addition to the aforementioned opening-day fixture of the 2023/24 season, the Nerazzurri have recorded three wins and two draws, with just one defeat. At San Siro, the record stands at two Inter wins and one Monza victory.
Across all competitions, the two teams have faced each other 13 times: seven times in the Coppa Italia and six in Serie A, with eight Inter wins, three draws and two Monza victories. One curious meeting came in the 1990/91 season, when Inter and Monza faced each other in the first round of the Coppa Italia. Both the first and second legs, which were won by Inter, were played at the Stadio Brianteo because San Siro was unavailable.
STATS AND FACTS
For the second consecutive year, Inter will open the season in front of their home fans: last year, the Nerazzurri began their campaign at San Siro with a 5-0 win over Torino. Since 2020, Inter have recorded five wins and one draw on the opening day of the league season, with their last defeat coming in 2018 away to Sassuolo.
The unbeaten run is even longer in opening-day matches played at the Meazza: Inter’s last defeat came on 13 September 1987, against Pescara (0-2). Since then, they have recorded 17 wins and three draws in 20 matches.
In Serie A history – since the introduction of the single-round format – only Juventus have scored more goals than Inter on the opening day: 207 compared with the Nerazzurri’s 185. Monza, meanwhile, have scored just once in their three opening-day matches in the top flight: Dany Mota’s goal against Torino in the 93rd minute and 57 seconds, which was also Monza’s first-ever goal on the opening day of a Serie A season.
Monza have also suffered one of the two heaviest defeats in their Serie A history against Inter: on 13 January 2024, the Nerazzurri won 5-1 at the U-Power Stadium, the same scoreline as Monza’s defeat to Lazio on 9 February 2025.
THU-LA ON THE OPENING DAY
Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram are preparing for their fourth consecutive season leading the Nerazzurri attack. Since the Frenchman first joined Inter in the summer of 2023, the opening day of the league season has always featured a brace from one of the two forwards.
In 2023, it was Lautaro’s turn, as he scored twice against Monza. In the two seasons since, Thuram has starred: he scored twice in the 2024 draw at Marassi against Genoa, followed by another two goals in the 5-0 win over Torino in 2025.
