— 10 minutes agoThe Nerazzurri are in action at the Penzo on Wednesday 28 October at 18:30 CET on league matchday nine
Following their victory over Fiorentina, Inter are preparing for the first midweek round of the season. The Nerazzurri will take to the pitch on Wednesday 28 October at 18:30 CET away to Venezia. The fixture, part of matchday nine in the Serie A, will see Chivu’s side face Davide Nicola’s orange-and-black team, who head into the match following a defeat to Genoa at the Marassi.
Wednesday’s match will mark a first for Venezia and Inter, who have never faced each other in Serie A on a day other than Saturday or Sunday. Here is your complete guide to the fixture.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Inter and Venezia have met 28 times in Serie A. The Nerazzurri lead the head-to-head record with 16 wins, compared with six for the Arancioneroverdi, while the remaining six matches have ended in draws.
The Nerazzurri have won each of their last four Serie A matches against Venezia, and they have only once recorded five consecutive victories against the Arancioneroverdi in the top flight, between November 1962 and January 1999. Inter have also conceded goals in just one of their last four Serie A meetings with Venezia and, more generally, have never conceded more than once in any of their last eight matches against the Lagoon side.
Only one of the last 14 Serie A meetings between the two teams has ended in a draw: a 1-1 result on 27 January 2002, with Christian Vieri and Filippo Maniero on the scoresheet. As for matches played at Venezia’s home ground, Inter have won their last two visits, although five of Venezia’s six victories in the overall head-to-head record have come at the Penzo.
THE NERAZZURRI’S FORM
Seven wins and one draw, with 23 goals scored and 10 conceded: Inter sit top of the Serie A table after eight matches, level on 22 points with Lazio. Chivu’s side have made an almost perfect start to the season, built on a series of outstanding attacking performances and a strong desire to win, consistently finding a way back into games when trailing. Indeed, the Nerazzurri have gained more points from losing positions than any other team across Europe’s top five leagues in 2026/27, with 13 — at least five more than any other side. This is a record for the first eight matchdays of a single Serie A season in the last 20 years. Further evidence of Inter’s ability to fight back is the fact that seven of their 23 goals have come in the final 15 minutes of matches, more than any other team in Serie A this season.
The Nerazzurri’s attacking style is reflected in the statistics: Inter have registered more shots on target than any other team in Serie A this season (62), recorded the highest expected goals (xG) figure (23.2), exactly matching their 23 goals scored, and attempted more open-play crosses than any other side (140, ahead of Juventus on 138 and Venezia on 126).
Chivu’s team have also hit the woodwork more times than any other side in Serie A this season (10), ranking joint-first across Europe’s top five leagues alongside Real Madrid. They also have more players who have created at least 15 chances than any other team in the division, with three: Federico Dimarco (19), Andy Diouf (16) and Nicolò Barella (16).
The Nerazzurri have the most prolific attack in the league, with 23 goals scored. It is only the third time in the three-points-for-a-win era that a team has scored more than 22 goals in its first eight Serie A matches of a season, following Napoli in 2017/18 (26) and Inter in 2021/22 (23).
THURAM’S NUMBERS
Marcus Thuram is enjoying an outstanding run of form and was the undisputed star of Inter’s comeback against Fiorentina and their strong start to the season. The French forward led the team’s late fightback against La Viola, scoring the equalizer before winning the penalty that secured the victory, his 100th goal involvement in an Inter shirt across all competitions. Tikus has been directly involved in a goal in each of his last six Serie A appearances, scoring five goals and providing two assists during that run. Tomorrow, he will face the only opponent against whom he has made more than one Serie A appearance (two) without scoring or providing an assist: Venezia.
BARELLA AND ZIELINSKI
Piotr Zieliński scored a decisive goal, keeping his cool to convert the 97th-minute penalty that earned Inter all three points against Fiorentina. The Polish midfielder (2 goals and 2 assists) is one of only four midfielders to have scored more than once and provided more than one assist in Serie A this season, alongside Adrien Rabiot, Nico Paz and Romano Schmid. Of those four, Zielinski has achieved the feat in the fewest minutes played this season, with 443.
Nicolò Barella, who scored against Venezia in Serie A on 22 January 2022, has completed 250 passes in the opposition half in the league this season. Among midfielders, only Douglas Luiz (319) and Lewis Ferguson (287) have recorded more. The win over Fiorentina was the 200th Serie A victory of his career. Since making his debut in the competition in the 2014/15 season, only two other players have reached that milestone: his teammate Piotr Zielinski (234 wins) and Paulo Dybala (213).
