Numbers, records, goals and plenty of emotions. In order to fully take stock of Inter vs. Fiorentina, you’d need to arm yourself with a calculator: three wins, nine points from a possible nine and a first Inter goal for Marcus Thuram. And then there are the goals from our number 10. Lautaro Martinez drew level with Aebi and then overtook him to move to 107 goals for Inter, placing him in the top ten all the all-time goalscorers list for the Club. But it didn’t and there, because after his goal and assist for El Toro’s first, Thuram won the penalty, which was converted by our number 20, Hakan Calhanoglu. All this was played out in front of over 72,000 spectators, who united to cheer on the Nerazzurri for the full 90 minutes.
And then there was another clean sheet, the Nerazzurri’s third in succession, which saw the team finish the first three matchdays with no goals conceded and eight scored, five by our captain who is the league’s top goalscorer this season as it stands. But let’s not just talk about numbers, because we see a spirited display from a team hungry to win. You could see as much from the recovery to win the ball back from the Viola, which Dimarco then put on a plate for Thuram to head home and open the scoring in the 24th minute. Then our number 9 showed his determination as he looked to get his second following Bastoni’s pass before Calhanoglu almost stunned San Siro with a beautifully-struck free-kick (41’). Back to stats: a disciplined Inter side finished the game with 21 shots, eleven on target and one effort that hit the woodwork, which came from Dumfries at the start of the second half. Inzaghi’s side began to impose themselves on the game and dominate the guests after the break. Lautaro then drew a stunning stop from Christensen with a header (53) before the Inter captain did get his goal, calmly converting following Thuram’s brilliant through ball. The Nerazzurri got their third a few minutes later as Thream got onto a loose ball and drew a foul in the box from Christensen. Calhanoglu stepped up and was ice-cold, 3-0 to the Nerazzurri. Inter shuffled the pack after the goal with various substitutions. One of the new faces was Cuadrado, who whipped in a perfect cross for Lautaro. El Toro’s first-time finish was a stroke of genius and it sailed into the far corner to hand Inter their fourth. The goal was the end of the game as a contest and the Nerazzurri came off the pitch to a standing ovation from the San Siro faithful.
