Inter vs. Lazio in the Coppa Italia: previous encounters

Inter are preparing to face Lazio in a straight knockout tie in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals. Kick-off is scheduled for 21:00 CET on Tuesday 25 February.

The upcoming match will be the 18th encounter between the sides in Italy's national cup competition. So far, the Nerazzurri have six wins to their name compared to the Biancocelesti's five, with six draws completing the picture. The teams have mostly faced each other in the quarter-finals: nine matches, with four wins each and a draw. Inter are unbeaten in each of their last five fixtures against Lazio in all competitions, scoring 15 and conceding just twice in the process.

Inter's first Coppa Italia match against the Biancocelesti took place on 14 June 1959, when the Nerazzurri won 1-0 in the quarter-finals thanks to a goal from Angelillo. Two years later, once again in the quarters, the team from the capital progressed to the next round following a narrow victory.

The next encounter arrived during the 1975/76 campaign: during the second round (Group A), Lazio won 1-0 before the Nerazzurri came away with a 3-2 victory at San Siro thanks to goals from Marini, Bertini and Cesati.

The next two meetings saw the teams play out two draws. The first match, which took place during the 1988/89 season, ended 1-1 in Group E, with Bianchi getting on the scoresheet for the Nerazzurri. The second fixture was played on 29 November 1995, when Lazio's Rambaudi cancelled out Maurizio Ganz's opener for a 1-1 first-leg draw in the last eight. The Nerazzurri then made it through the tie thanks to Nicola Berti's winner in Rome.

The 1998/99 campaign saw Inter produce a fantastic comeback in the quarter-finals: after Lazio's 2-1 victory in Rome, the Nerazzurri hit back with a brilliant 5-2 win at San Siro. Djorkaeff took centre stage with a brace, while Cauet, Ze Elias and Moriero also got on the scoresheet.

In 1999/00, the two teams met in the final for the one and only time to date. Over two legs, Lazio emerged victorious thanks to their 2-1 win at the Olimpico in the first fixture.

The Nerazzurri gained revenge in 2005/06 with a victory in the quarter-finals. Dejan Stankovic left his mark in the two-legged tie, scoring once in both fixtures. It finished 1-1 in Rome before the Serbian midfielder's winner in Milano. That was an important match for Inter, who went on to beat Udinese in the semi-finals and Roma in the final. The Nerazzurri thus won the Coppa Italia for the fifth time.

Two years later, Inter once again got the better of the Biancocelesti, this time in the semi-finals. Over two matches, the Nerazzurri secured qualification for the final thanks to a 2-0 second-leg victory in Rome, with Pelé and Cruz getting on the scoresheet. However, the last two meetings - both times in the quarter-finals - have seen the Biancocelesti emerge victorious (in 2016/17 and 2018/19).
