INTER VS. LIVERPOOL | PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Inter will face Liverpool after their last showdown in the Round of 16 of the 2021/22 Champions League. The match will take place at San Siro and will be the seventh official meeting between the Nerazzurri and the Reds.
Their first match dates back to the 1964/65 European Cup: in the first leg of the semifinal at Anfield, Liverpool won 3-1 with Sandro Mazzola briefly securing an equaliser before the Reds took the lead again (3' Hunt, 10' Mazzola, 33' Callaghan, 74' St.John). The return leg was one of the most legendary matches in Inter's history, with an unforgettable 3-0 comeback at San Siro. Early goals from Corso and Peirò were followed up by Giacinto Facchetti's seal in the second half. With the victory and the qualification into the final, Herrera's Inter went on to defend their European title by beating Benfica 1-0 (Jair).
The other two-legged matches date back to the 2007/08 season, just before the celebrations for Inter's 100th anniversary. In the Round of 16, the first leg at Anfield saw a 2-0 win for Liverpool. The Nerazzurri defence stayed tight for the majority of the game but fell through in the final moments (86' Kuyt, 91' Gerrard): after being down to ten men from the 30th minute because of a controversial yellow card for Materazzi, Inter lost Coórdoba to injury late on, giving way to Liverpool's second goal. In the return leg at San Siro, the atmosphere was electric, the crowd spurred the team on, there were plenty of chances, but Torres sealed an excellent 1-0 for Liverpool, closing the tie.
Finally, their most recent encounter came in the 2021/22 season, again in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. After the first leg at San Siro was sealed in the final 15 minutes by goals from Firmino and Salah, Inter came close to a historic achievement in the return leg at Anfield. Lautaro scored a beautiful goal for Inter's first-ever win at Anfield, but the team was down to ten men and ultimately fell short of qualifying for the quarter-finals after an eventful match.
