Interisti at the World Cup: Dumfries and de Vrij

Out of the six Nerazzurri players taking part in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, two are in the Netherlands squad: Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij. The Dutch are in Group A along with hosts Qatar, Senegal and Ecuador.

It's no surprise that the Inter duo were called up: both are established members of the Netherlands setup.

Dumfries and de Vrij are continuing the tradition of Dutch Inter players participating in the World Cup. They've followed in the footsteps of Dennis Bergkamp and Wim Jonk in 1994, Aaron Winter in 1998 and Wesley Sneijder in 2010.

DE VRIJ, THE NETHERLANDS AND WORLD CUPS

It won't be Stefan de Vrij's first World Cup. The Inter defender has found the net three times in 59 appearances for his country, with one of these goals coming at a World Cup. Indeed, he scored in the Netherlands' 5-1 victory over reigning World Champions Spain in the 2014 edition of the tournament. It was his first goal for his country.

During the qualification process for Qatar, de Vrij made six appearances for the Dutch, who didn't qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

DUMFRIES, THE NETHERLANDS AND WORLD CUPS

In 37 matches for the Netherlands, Denzel Dumfries has scored five goals, all of which have come in the past 17 months. Dumfries, who made his national team debut in 2018, established himself as a starter at last year's Euros, scoring twice during that particular tournament.

It's the wing-back's first World Cup. During qualifying, he scored once in seven appearances.
