Inter into the Champions League round of 16: the situation in Group D

Thanks to their 1-0 victory over Salzburg, Inter have qualified for the 2023/24 Champions League round of 16. Indeed, Lautaro's penalty secured the Nerazzurri's spot in the knockouts with two games to spare. This had only previously happened in 2004/05, when Inter had Valencia, Werder Bremen and Anderlecht in their group. Back then, too, the Nerazzurri picked up ten points from their first four games to progress to the last 16.

Simone Inzaghi's side are leading Group D alongside Real Sociedad, who beat Benfica 3-1 and are now also in the knockouts. The next two matchdays will decide who finishes top of the group.

So far this Champions League campaign, Inter have drawn 1-1 with Real Sociedad in Spain and won three in a row: 1-0 and 2-1 victories over Benfica (Thuram) and Salzburg (Sanchez, Calhanoglu) at home, respectively, and a 1-0 success away to the Austrian side (Lautaro).
