A performance full of quality and heart, and a victory fought for and deserved: Inter U23 beat Scafatese 2-1 in the rearranged matchday eight fixture in Serie C, securing a home league win that had eluded them since 20 September. The Nerazzurri scored once in each half, inspired once again by Zuberek, who found the net for the fourth consecutive match, and Marello, whose superb free kick proved decisive. It was a long match, featuring numerous chances and several stoppages, in which Inter played with personality and intensity, creating plenty of opportunities and defending with pride and organization in the closing stages. A deserved victory that takes the Nerazzurri to 17 points after 11 matches, drawing them level with Scafatese in seventh place. Vecchi’s side will return to action on Sunday 1 November at 12:30, when they travel to face Cosenza.
THE MATCH The sun was shining over the Breda for Inter U23’s third consecutive home fixture. Vecchi made several changes to the side that had featured in the previous match, handing Garonetti, Donato and Amerighi starting roles, while Iddrissou also returned to the starting XI for the first time since 7 September. The Nerazzurri made a strong start, moving the ball with pace and intensity as they looked to play forward. Iddrissou was immediately involved, rising to meet a cross from the left by Marello at the far post. His header bounced off the ground and struck Bacchetti’s arm before being gathered by Forte. Inter’s bench called on the referee to review the incident on the monitor, but no penalty was awarded. Inter continued their positive start with two more chances between the 11th and 12th minutes, both stemming from combinations between Kaczmarski and Charlys. The Polish midfielder played a through ball to the Brazilian, who was denied at the last moment by Forte rushing off his line. A minute later, the move was repeated and Charlys found the net with a fine right-footed shot across goal, but he had started from an offside position. In the 19th minute, however, Vecchi was forced into his first substitution after an unfortunate injury to Iddrissou, who was replaced by Zuberek. Scafatese registered their first threat after 22 minutes, when Emmausso struck a well-taken free kick from distance. His right-footed effort bounced in front of Melgrati and clipped the outside of the post. After a more disjointed spell, with fewer chances and a number of errors, Inter took the lead. Once again, it was Jan Zuberek who put the Nerazzurri in front. Amerighi delivered a cross from the right, finding the Polish forward in the middle of the box, where he turned and volleyed right-footed into the bottom-left corner. It was an outstanding piece of technical and athletic execution, and Zuberek’s sixth goal in his last four matches underlined his remarkable form. Inter’s celebrations lasted just over two minutes. A long ball from Brunet picked out Palmieri’s run down the right. He cut sharply inside onto his left foot, catching the Nerazzurri defence by surprise, before placing his shot beyond Melgrati to bring the visitors level. Inter immediately pushed forward again and created two more chances before half-time. In the 41st minute, Fiordilino produced an excellent through ball for Amerighi’s run, but the latter was unable to control it cleanly in a promising position. Then, deep into stoppage time, Fumagalli crossed from the left and found Charlys making a central run into the box. The Brazilian went down following contact, and the referee initially awarded a penalty, only to overturn the decision after reviewing the incident on the monitor.
The teams returned to the pitch with the score at 1-1, a result that did not reflect Inter’s dominance in the first half. The Nerazzurri picked up where they had left off, playing at pace and drawing energy from Amerighi’s tireless running and attacking initiative. Amerighi first struck the post with a header after getting in front of his marker from a corner. Then, in the 52nd minute, he surged down the right, beat Ferrara and delivered a fine cross from the byline, with Fumagalli narrowly beaten to the ball. Inter continued to apply pressure, and a minute later Fiordilino won possession high up the pitch before immediately playing a forward pass to Kaczmarski, who had found space on the right side of the opposition box. His right-footed shot across goal, however, went wide. Seven minutes later, the Nerazzurri’s pressure finally paid off. Amerighi won the ball again in midfield and drove forward through the centre. Bacchetti brought him down just outside the box, and the referee initially showed a straight red card. However, following an intervention from the visitors’ bench and a review on the monitor, he changed his decision to a yellow card. Marello stepped up to take the free kick and produced a perfect left-footed strike from the edge of the area, curling the ball in off the post to Forte’s right. The goalkeeper had no chance against the Nerazzurri wing-back’s superb effort. Having regained the lead, Inter U23 tried to manage the game more carefully, but as the minutes passed, they were forced to give Scafatese more space to attack as the visitors pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Vecchi’s players remained compact and committed to protecting their advantage, giving everything to secure all three points. In the closing stages, Tosto threw himself in front of two opposition shots, while a long-range effort from Brunet drifted narrowly wide. During the six minutes of stoppage time, Scafatese laid siege to the Nerazzurri penalty area but failed to create any clear-cut chances. When the final whistle sounded, Inter celebrated their fifth league victory of the season.
