Back with a goal: Hakan Calhanoglu returned to San Siro and to the pitch after two weeks, coming on in the second half of Inter vs. Genoa. With the score still tight, the Turk proved decisive for the Nerazzurri, scoring with a perfect penalty, opening up his right-footed strike. The finish gave Bijlow no chance and allowed Inter to seal the win against Genoa.
Calhanoglu spoke about his return in the post-match interviews. Alongside him, Yann Sommer and Carlos Augusto also shared their thoughts.
“It was right to ask Zielinski if he wanted to take the penalty, because I’ve just come back after some time and today I felt it was his turn. I’m happy and I’m trying to regain match rhythm, even though I’m definitely not at 100%; I’m pleased with this goal and this result. We only focus on ourselves, we don’t think about AC Milan or the derby: winning is always important and brings positivity, and we want to keep going like this.”

“This match is very important after the Bodo game, in which we didn’t do very well, in the Champions League we had big goals. Sometimes things go that way, they were a very strong opponent: we talked about that match, but we immediately looked ahead to focus on today’s game and we did very well. 15th clean sheet in the league? That’s the most important thing for us. Up front we want to be dangerous and control the game, but it’s important to always stay compact and prevent opponents from creating danger. We were strong in duels and kept our distances well. A great team must also be strong after a defeat, even though it wasn’t easy: it’s important to talk about it and move forward together with great focus. As a goalkeeper, it’s nice to play with such a team in front of you: we defend strongly together and seeing it from behind feels great, as does being part of this defense. The important thing is to keep going like this: we want to do everything to go all the way in the Coppa Italia and reach Rome. It will be an interesting match against Como, who are a strong team that likes to play, it will be nice to face them.”
Yann Sommer
“It was a very important victory: there are 11 matches left plus the Coppa Italia, and we have to do our best in all of these games. Once again, we showed the strength of our group: after defeats like that, everyone expects us to give up, but instead we proved that we are a great team. It was truly a great win. We know that losses like the one against Bodo hurt, but we are a group of experienced players. We have also faced difficulties in recent years, but we have always known how to react. Everyone expects us to drop off, instead today we showed that we are ready for what lies ahead. There is the league and the cup, and we want to do our best. It’s clear that we always pay attention to the standings and to the other matches. It’s part of our life in football, we look at everything. But I always say it: we have to focus on doing our own job, because if we don’t win our matches, we can’t stay up there at the top.”
