Inter are Champions of Italy! Fireworks light up San Siro, an enormous banner with 21 on it covers the pitch at the Meazza, and Giuseppe Marotta embraces Cristian Chivu, the leader of a team that has dominated the league.
Here are the Nerazzurri President and CEO's comments as he expresses his joy over a spectacular triumph.
“This is my first Scudetto as president: it's a dream come true. I never thought it would happen, even though my dream as a child was to become a football executive. Achieving it as President of Inter is surreal. I would first like to thank all those who came before me, many more worthy presidents than myself, who were sources of inspiration. Soon we will commemorate the passing of Ernesto Pellegrini, but I am also thinking of Moratti, Facchetti, Fraizzoli, and Steven Zhang. I would also like to thank all these wonderful fans and our ownership who have allowed us to work freely. But this Scudetto truly belongs to Chivu and the team. We decided to appoint Chivu because we saw he had this crucial quality that managers need: courage. Chivu had an illustrious career behind him, having captained Ajax at 21, winning as a coach with the Primavera team, and his experience at Parma. It was all this that led us to choose him without hesitation. The only thing he lacked was experience, and we supported him when it came to that. He can and should remain at Inter for many years to come. After that challenging period at the start of the season, when performances were still very good, we realised that the team was united with their coach as the leader. I have never sacked a coach in the middle of the season; the head coach is vital, and he should have the appropriate support. You cannot make judgments on instinct. We have a different culture, we knew his importance and the importance of the team. It's not yet time to discuss transfers, but we have a clear picture of what we need to do in the future, partly thanks to our ongoing dialogue with the ownership. This group has been built over the years, with a key core of Italian players, and we need to continue in this direction. Some great players would suit our style as well as experienced foreign players who bring a winning mindset. ”
