Technique, character and leadership: qualities that defined Giorgos Karagounis throughout his career. Born in Pyrgos, Greece, on 6 March 1977, the former Nerazzurri midfielder celebrates his 49th birthday today.
A player blessed with a precise and cultured right foot, Karagounis is a symbol of Greek football. In 2004, he played a starring role in Greece’s incredible triumph at UEFA EURO 2004, and with 139 appearances he holds the record for the most caps for his country.
Karagounis joined Inter in 2003 and spent two seasons with the Nerazzurri, making 36 appearances and winning the Coppa Italia in 2005. Notably, he was also one of the key figures in two unforgettable moments. The first came on a spectacular European night in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup, when Inter defeated Benfica 4-3 at San Siro, inspired by Giorgos' outstanding play and assists. The second is linked to a historic commentary by Roberto Scarpini: "Allarga là per Karagounis, allarga là per Karagounis" ("Spread it out to Karagounis, spread it out to Karagounis"). With these words began the final part of the commentary on Inter's 3-2 victory over UC Sampdoria, a match the Nerazzurri won with an extraordinary comeback, completed in the closing stages in just six minutes.
Today, Giorgos Karagounis turns 49: best birthday wishes from the entire Nerazzurri family!
