Happy birthday, Matrix!

To every Inter fan, his name means so much more than that of a footballer. For many years, Marco Materazzi was more than just a player in the Nerazzurri shirt: he was a symbol of Inter, a role model for teammates and fans, and a leader both on and off the pitch.

For ten years, Matrix led Inter’s defence, playing every match with a fighting spirit, complete determination and his unmistakable armour: the Nerazzurri No. 23 shirt. In total, Marco made 276 appearances for Inter, scoring 20 goals, 10 of which came during the extraordinary 2006/07 season, when Materazzi helped lead his teammates to the Scudetto after playing a decisive role in Italy’s World Cup triumph in Germany. That Serie A title was just one of the 15 trophies Matrix won with Inter: 5 Scudetti, 4 Coppa Italia titles, 4 Italian Super Cups, 1 Champions League and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

A commanding defender who was also technically talented, Materazzi captured the hearts of Inter fans during his ten years in Nerazzurro, when the chant “Tutti pazzi per Materazzi” rang out in San Siro. Materazzi cemented his place in Club history with his induction into the Inter Hall of Fame in 2021.

Born in Lecce on 19 August 1973, Matrix turns 53 today and FC Internazionale Milano and all Nerazzurri fans send him our best wishes.
