In football, sometimes imperfection can make all the difference. A perfectly struck ball might miss the target, while a deflection can decide a game and send an entire stadium into frenzy. That’s exactly what happened for Pio Esposito in the 78th minute of Inter vs Lecce: an imperfect finish off Falcone’s rebound, but enough to score the winning goal for the Nerazzurri. The 2005-born forward came on in the 56th minute, fighting for every ball, playing clever flick-ons, and disrupting every pass that came his way. In just 34 minutes, he won 5 of 8 duels and capped it off with his first Serie A goal at San Siro.
Pio Esposito spoke about the winning feeling after the match:
“Honestly, I’ve been waiting for this goal for a long time, and finally it’s here. Hard work always pays off in one way or another. I’m really happy. It was amazing to score at home in front of these fans. I’ve dreamed of it since I was a kid wearing this shirt. For me, it’s up there with my first goal for the national team and my first for Inter, but this one is definitely the most decisive. The only thing missing at San Siro is a Champions League goal? That’s fine, tonight I’m happy, we’ll think about the rest later. I saw the coach during the celebration after the goal. Something similar happened back in the Primavera. We have a bond that goes beyond words, but there's lots of respect and affection. He might not say much, but I know he’s always there. We grew together, me as a player and him as a coach. Our bond is important, and he means a lot to me. Chivu makes each everyone feel important every day. I know exactly the calibre of who I play with, and what matters most to me is Inter. Six months ago I was in Serie B, and my minutes are already more than I expected. We’re raring to go and being top of the table doesn’t scare us, that’s what we all want. Every game is tough and the season is long, but we want to stay up there. ”
