Inter played eight matches in January, coming up against Atalanta, AC Milan Venezia, Bologna, Empoli, Sparta Praha, Lecce and Monaco. In the opening month of the year, the Nerazzurri recorded six victories across Serie A, the Champions League and Supercoppa Italiana and scored a total of 18 goals. It's now time for the Inter fans to select the Nerazzurro who stood out the most by voting for the January Pirelli Player Player of the Month.
The four candidates in the running to win the award are Nicolò Barella, Stefan De Vrij, Denzel Dumfries and Lautaro Martinez.
NICOLÒ BARELLA Making a constant contribution both defensively and in attack and always combining quality with hard work. Nicolò Barella had a highly intense January, a month where he provided two crucial assists. Indeed, he set up Lautaro to score on two occasions, first for the opener against Empoli and then for the Nerazzurri’s second goal against Monaco.
STEFAN DE VRIJ Leadership, experience and solidity. Stefan De Vrij continues to deliver near-perfect performances, bringing calm and determination to the entire team. The Dutch defender featured in all eight of Inter’s matches in January.
DENZEL DUMFRIES Up and down the flank, with a sweet penchant for scoring. January saw Denzel Dumfries net an impressive five goals in eight matches. The Dutch wing-back bagged a brace in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final against Atalanta and has found the net in each of Inter’s last three league matches (against Bologna, Empoli and Lecce).
LAUTARO MARTINEZ An unforgettable month for Lautaro Martinez. The Nerazzurri captain was an inspirational figure thanks to his grit and, above all, his goals. The Argentinian striker found the net eight times in eight matches in January, and they were all important goals that allowed him to rewrite Nerazzurri history. In fact, he equalled Mazzola’s Club record for the most goals in the Champions League (17), and he has also become the sixth-highest scorer in Inter’s history (144 goals) after surpassing Benito Lorenzi.
