Sommer: "We're Inter. We need courage and energy"

Inter are back in European action when they take on Bayern München in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Simone Inzaghi's side take on Die Roten in the first leg at the Munich Football Arena tomorrow night.

Ahead of the first leg, Yann Sommer, formerly of Bayern, joined Head Coach Simone Inzaghi for the pre-match press conference.

You know this environment and this team; what do Inter need to be aware of? "Tomorrow's game is massive. We need to be brave. They press high and with aggression. They're a top team, and we need to make our presence known and be courageous on the ball. The aim is to win the game."

At this stadium, you made a record 19 saves for Borussia Mönchengladbach; how do you feel about this ground? "It's nice to be back in Munich, I'm happy to be playing for Inter against Bayern at this stadium. It's amazing; I like being here."

What's your mindset like after the draw with Parma? "Of course, we weren't happy with the draw. Against Udinese, too, there were times when it was too easy for our opponents to create chances. Normally, we're strong at the back by playing with energy, communicating and maintaining our spacing. We need all this. This is Inter; in the last game, we lacked these things. The aim tomorrow is to rediscover them."

What do you think about Jonas Urbig, who's come in to replace Neuer and is going through a similar thing you did during your time at Bayern? "I think he's a great keeper. I've not seen him play much, but he's impressed me lately. He's good with his feet and doesn't need advice from me. Bayern are a top side, and being number 2 to Neuer isn't easy. Urbig will work hard, and I wish him all the best. I can't wait to face him."

How would you assess your spell at Bayern? "It was a great period for me. We had a lot of success and won the Bundesliga. There were a lot of changes at the end of the season. It was an intense time, and we won. We'd have liked to win more, but I felt good at Bayern, and my family too. I can't wait to see my old teammates again."

What do you think are Bayern's weaknesses? "We'll see. We must prepare well. The gaffer held a good meeting; we'll need to play with courage and quality. We have got to be compact and keep the right spacing. It'll be an interesting match between two strong sides."

On the Parma game, can you sum up the difference between Inter's defence in Serie A and the Champions League? "I always think it's hard to explain things like this. The aim for us remains the same: make life difficult for our opponents. We've done a bit better at this in the Champions League, but we know that we can improve in terms of our energy and communication, as I said. That makes it hard for teams to create chances against us. We're playing a lot - a game every three days - so it's difficult to always be in top shape, but we are Inter and we want to be there all the time, in every competition."

Inter and Bayern, historically, share a close bond; what makes the two clubs similar? "I am not sure. Sometimes, it's a question of luck. These are two of the biggest clubs in world football. There have been players who have played for both clubs, but I think it's also down to a bit of coincidence."
