From Ferri to Bergomi, Zenga to Berti: condolences and fondest memories

Andreas Brehme has left us and so has a piece of the record-breaking Inter side. Above all, for that incredible squad that wrote a legendary chapter in the Nerazzurri history books, we have lost a friend, a teammate, a person who always fondly shared his bond with the Club off the pitch.

Brehme was a formidable player: at Inter from 1988 to 1992, he won a Scudetto, a UEFA Cup, and a Supercoppa Italiana, scoring 12 goals in 154 appearances. He wasn't just a winner in Italy. With Germany, he won the World Cup, scoring the winning goal in the 1990 final, and he won two German league titles (with Bayern Munich and Kaiserslautern).

Memories from his teammates on the record-breaking Inter side are heartfelt. Brehme, arriving from Bayern Munich in 1988, was one of the stars of that great Inter. Goals from the spot, from free-kicks, assists, unstoppable runs. Then the international meetings: the Nerazzurri with Italy (Zenga, Bergomi, Berti, Ferri, Serena) and with Germany (Brehme, Klinsmann, Matthäus).

“More than an ex-teammate, Andy was a friend for life. Even if he no longer lived in Italy, we were often in contact: he would always ask me how things were going with Inter, he wanted to live and breathe the Nerazzurri present. His sense of belonging, his Interista being never dwindled. Even after his career with the Nerazzurri ended, he always emphasised his love and interest in our colours. He was someone with important values, a profound person. He had a personality on the pitch but showed it in the right way, with great loyalty and a sense of duty. From a footballing point of view, he was incredible: he is the only player I have met over my career that no one could define as left or right-footed. Then, if you were struggling on the pitch, there was only one thing to do: pass to Andy. It was like cashing in.”

“It seems impossible: we talked all the time. He is definitely the foreign player with whom I've kept the strongest and longest relationship. He was still tied to the squad, the Nerazzurri colours. He was always brilliant, a good person with the desire to live. We remember him for the penalty in the World Cup final, but we shouldn't forget that Andy was part of one of the best teams in German history, in the Hall of Fame, he also shone with Germany at the 1986 World Cup, scoring from a free-kick in the semi-final. We're talking about an incredible champion, that played in an incredible way with either foot. I called him the defensive director, he was our security: when we needed to play, we gave the ball to him or Matteoli.”

“Andy era come un fratello più grande per me. Mi ha aiutato tantissimo quando sono arrivato all‘Inter, era sempre disponibile, sempre gentile e positivo. Era attento al gruppo e pensava sempre prima agli altri rispetto che a se stesso! Siamo sempre rimasti in contatto, ovunque eravamo nel mondo: il nostro legame è rimasto vero e forte. Abbiamo perso un grande giocatore, un grandissimo amico e una persona favolosa. ”

Jurgen Klinsmann

“Andy has left us too soon. He will watch over us from above as he did on the pitch, when he said "Go on Walter, I'm there". He was phenomenal: in training during the week, I would put myself between the sticks and face him. He took 10 penalties against me, 5 with the right foot and 5 with the left. Farewell, my friend.”

“For me, Andy wasn't just a teammate but also a friend, and he always will be. We were part of a tight group with a very special bond. I remember the 8 July 1990 very well, when I stopped at the Olimpico because they were on the pitch, my teammates: Klinsmann, Matthäus e Brehme, I was there to support them that day when Andy won the final against Argentina. That bond, that friendship, has never changed. We will remember him today and always. ”

Nicola Berti

“Andy was more than a teammate to me, we spoke not long ago. He is a forever friend, a friend for life that will be missed dearly and we will never forget.”

Andrea Mandorlini

“I have a vivid memory of Andy from when he had just arrived, then he sort of took my role and played in a modern way, scoring goals and providing assists, he was a star on and off the pitch. We spoke in recent months, always with a smile, we had many adventures together. It is a huge loss for us all and for the Nerazzurri.”

Beppe Baresi

“Not only a teammate, it was he who helped me score on the pitch. He played an altruistic game, a testament to his character. A simple man who lived a simple life and who became a champion with a penalty kick. ”
