After the international break, Inter return to Serie A for the seventh matchday of the 2025/26 season. Christian Chivu's Nerrazzuri will visit Roma at the Olimpico in for an interesting fixture steeped in history. It's a match that has always promised emotion and plenty of goals.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS
Roma and Inter have met 184 times in Serie A, and it is the fixture with the most goals scored in total in the history of the league: 532, 299 of which were scored by the Nerrazzurri and 233 by the Giallorossi. If they score at the Olimpico, Inter would become the first team to reach 300 goals against a single opponent in Serie A.
Inter have also won the most games against Roma in Serie A: 79 wins, 54 draws and 51 defeats. Roma is also the team Inter has beaten the most in Serie A history: 79 wins, 54 draws and 51 losses. Recent history favors the Nerazzurri, who have gone unbeaten in 14 of the last 16 meetings (8W, 6D), including seven wins in the last nine encounters.
At the Olimpico, Inter has another notable streak: eight games without defeat (5W, 3D), including four consecutive wins, a feat never before achieved at Roma’s home.
NERAZZURRI STATS
Inter come into this clash in excellent form: five consecutive wins across all competitions, with the chance to secure a sixth, a milestone they didn’t reach last season and haven’t achieved since March 2024.
With 22 goals scored in their first eight games of the season, Chivu’s team matches the attacking output of Gigi Simoni’s Inter in 1997/98. In Europe, only Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt boast a higher scoring average than the Nerazzurri (2.8 goals per game).
Deadly from set-pieces and in the air, Inter is the team with the most headed goals (5) and the most goals from corners (4) in this Serie A season.
“La Roma è una squadra organizzata, che difende bene, sa interpretare i momenti, viene avanti con coraggio e determinazione ma sa anche chiudersi con ordine. Dovremo essere lucidi e rapidi nel capire dove possono concedere qualcosa, sfruttare i momenti giusti e colpire con decisione”
Cristian Chivu
LAUTARO THE GAME-CHANGER
Captain and offensive talisman, Lautaro Martínez is enjoying a period of remarkable consistency. Having scored in three consecutive games (four in total), the Argentine aims to extend his streak at the very stadium where he shone on October 20, 2024, opening the scoring in Inter’s 2-0 win.
With 158 goals in total, Lautaro has matched Luigi Cevenini for fifth place on Inter’s all-time top scorers list. A milestone that reflects the steady rise of a forward who has become both a symbol and a leader for the team.
THE DIMARCO-BASTONI PARTNERSHIP
Federico Dimarco is a key part of Inter's strong defence. He has created more chances than anyone else in Serie A this season (22), eleven of them clear scoring opportunities, showcasing his attacking potential and the quality of his left foot. With two goals and three assists, he’s the league’s most productive defender.
Alongside him, Alessandro Bastoni shows leadership and precision: one goal and two assists, for a total of three goal contributions, second only to his defensive partner. Dimarco is the defender who has been involved in the most goals over the past five Serie A seasons (38), a testament to his consistent impact on Inter’s attack.
THE CALHANOGLU FACTOR
Since his arrival at Inter, Hakan Çalhanoglu has redefined long-range shooting in Serie A. With ten goals from outside the box since 2021/22, he sits level with Dybala and Vlahović at the top. Across Europe’s top five leagues, only Mbappé, De Bruyne, and Kane have scored more in that time .
His ability to set the tempo of the game and convert set-pieces into goals remains one of the most valuable assets of the Nerazzurri system.
BONNY, ENERGY AND EFFICIENCY
One of the surprises of this season’s start is Ange-Yoan Bonny, who has made an immediate impact at Inter. The French forward has been involved in five goals in six appearances (two goals and three assists), bringing physicality, movement, and work ethic to the attack. His contribution has been crucial to the team’s balance, combining power and technique effectively.
THE OPPONENTS: ROMA
Roma, led by Gianpiero Gasperini, have got off to a good start earning 15 points in six games (five victories and only one defeat). The Giallorossi currently have the best defence in the league, having conceded just two goals. They have scored seven so far.
The opening game of the season saw Roma win 1-0 against Bologna, and against Pisa with the same result. On the third matchday the narrowly lost at home to Torino, but they quickly recovered winning the derby thanks to Pellegrini's goal. They also won their last two games: 2-0 at the Olimpico against Hellas Verona and 2-1 away to Fiorentina. In the Europa League so far, the Giallorossi have won against Nizza and lost to Lille. Against the Nerrazzurri, Gasperini will most likely play a 3-4-2-1 with Svilar in goal, a back three of Celik, Mancini and Ndicka, Wesley, Koné, Cristante and Tsimikas in midfield, while Soulé and Pellegrini will be just behind Dovbyk. Gasperini is expected to line up in a 3-4-2-1 formation with Svilar in goal, a back three of Celik, Mancini, and Ndicka, midfielders Wesley, Koné, Cristante, and Tsimikas, while Soulé and Pellegrini will support Dovbyk in attack.
“Dobbiamo fare una partita di livello, coraggiosa e competitiva contro una delle migliori squadre d'Italia. Se fai 15 punti su 18 bisogna migliorare con le prestazioni, con i risultati è difficile, mi aspetto un'Inter determinata, che voglia ristabilire le graduatorie del campionato: mi sembra proprio una bella sfida.”
Gian Piero Gasperini
