— YesterdayWorld Cup begins for the Nerazzurri: Akanji plays full 90 minutes in draw against Qatar
The World Cup is up and running, and with it the first appearances of Inter players on football's biggest stage. Manuel Akanji was the first Nerazzurri player to take to the pitch, lining up for Switzerland against Qatar in their opening Group B match.
The match at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara was played under bright sunshine in a festive atmosphere. The colours of football and the World Cup were enhanced by the Californian setting, evoking memories of the 1994 tournament. Switzerland took the lead in the 17th minute through a confidently converted penalty by Breel Embolo, awarded after Qatar goalkeeper Abunada fouled Freuler. The Swiss created numerous chances but were unable to put the game beyond doubt, allowing Qatar to snatch a dramatic equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time through a header from Khoukhi. It was a historic goal for Qatar, celebrated enthusiastically by Julen Lopetegui's side, as it secured the nation's first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup. Manuel Akanji was named in Murat Yakin's starting XI and played the full 90 minutes.
Switzerland will return to action on Thursday 18 June at 21:00 CEST against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Inglewood. After the opening round of Group B fixtures, all four teams are level on one point following Bosnia's 1-1 draw with Canada.
