Croatia began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a defeat as they were beaten 4-2 by England in their opening Group L match. Not only was this Croatia's first game of the tournament, but also Petar Sucic's World Cup debut, with the midfielder playing for the full 90 minutes.
At Arlington, England and Croatia produced an end-to-end thrilling encounter. England took the lead in the twelfth minute through Harry Kane, converting from the spot in a second attempt after the referee ordered a retake. Sucic set up play for Croatia's equaliser as the Nerazzurri midfielder, who was part of the starting XI, produced a fine piece of play before laying the ball off for Martin Baturina to score to make it 1-1 in the 36th minute. Kane's second goal once again gave England the lead, but Musa's strike got Croatia back on level terms. England regained the lead early in the second half through Jude Bellingham in the 47th minute and held onto their advantage before Marcus Rashford scored a fourth in the closing stages. Sucic remained on the pitch for the entire game.
With the victory, England move to the top of Group L on three points, while Croatia remain without a point at the bottom.
