Career Story
Born in Reykjavík, Iceland, on July 26, 2003, Cecilia Runarsdottir is a talented goalkeeper.
Runarsdottir took her first steps in football with Thróttur Reykjavík, a club based in the Icelandic capital, before joining Afturelding at the age of six. At 10 years old, she played as a goalkeeper for the first time — a role she would never leave behind. In 2017, she began her professional career with Afturelding’s first team in the Icelandic third division, winning the league title. The following year, she played 13 matches in the second division and won the award for Best Young Player of the tournament.
In 2018, she moved to Fylkir, newly promoted to the top division. Runarsdottir enjoyed an excellent season, once again winning the competition’s Best Young Player award. In 2021, she joined Swedish side Örebro SK before being signed by Everton, who immediately loaned her back to the Swedish club. The following year, Cecilia joined Bayern Munich on loan, and the German club completed her permanent transfer in July 2022. With Bayern, she won the 2023/24 league title before joining Inter in the summer of 2024.
Rúnarsdóttir played for all of Iceland’s youth national teams. In 2019, she received her first call-up to the senior national team. She made her debut for Iceland in 2020.
