Stats review: Inter’s season so far in numbers

MILAN - Inter haven’t been able to play their last two league games, but while we wait for our return to the pitch, let’s take the time to look at the statistics from the Nerazzurri’s first 24 games in Serie A this season (compiled in collaboration with Opta). In this period, Conte’s boys have collected 16 wins, six draws and two defeats, scoring 49 and conceding 22 along the way.

MINUTES IN THE LEAD AND BIG COMEBACKS In their 24 league games so far, the Nerazzurri have led for a total of 1024 minutes, more than any other side in the league this season. Inter have completed successful comebacks in three games, coming back from behind to find all three points away to Bologna (a Lukaku brace), at home to Verona (goals from Vecino and Barella), and in the second #DerbyMilano of the season, the Nerazzurri coming back from 2-0 down in the first half to win 4-2 after goals from Brozovic, Vecino, de Vrij and Lukaku.

INTER AND ALL OUR SCORERS The Nerazzurri have only failed to score in one game: our nil-nil draw at home to Roma. This is only matched by one other side, with Juventus held to a 0-0 draw away in Florence too. Inter’s 49 goals in Serie A have come from 15 different players: only Real Madrid (18), Nice, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool (16) have more different goalscorers in Europe’s Top 5 leagues.

The list of our Serie A scorers reads as follows: Lukaku (17); Lautaro (eleven); Brozovic and Sensi (three); de Vrij, Candreva, Vecino and Gagliardini (two); Borja Valero, Bastoni, Barella, Esposito, D'Ambrosio, Sanchez and Young (one).

Including all competitions, the Nerazzurri boast 18 different scorers, with Ranocchia (one, Coppa Italia), Biraghi and Eriksen (one, Europa League) all adding their names to the list.

Across all competitions this season, Inter have scored a total of 69 goals (49 in the league, six in the Coppa Italia, ten in the Champions League and four in the Europa League): our top scorer this season is Lukaku (23 goals), followed by Lautaro Martinez (16).

Romelu Lukaku has now scored twelve away goals in the league, making him the highest scorer in away games in Europe’s Top 5 leagues this season. The strike partnership of Lautaro-Lukaku boasts 28 league goals: only Lazio’s front two of Caicedo-Immobile have scored more in this year’s top flight in Italy (35 goals).

A MORE THAN SOLID DEFENCE Inter have conceded the fewest goals for any team in Serie A this season (22). In general, only Real Madrid (17), Atlético Madrid (19), Liverpool (20) and Reims (21) have conceded fewer goals in Europe’s Top 5 leagues this season. Milan Skriniar and Stefan de Vrij have been absolute stalwarts of the Nerazzurri defence, and are also the two players to have exchanged the most passes in Serie A 2019/20 (530). Our defenders’ involvement in our play is proved by Milan Skriniar’s statistics, our centre-back boasting an average of 60.3 passes per game. Only Fabian Ruiz (67.7, Napoli) and Marcelo Brozovic (61.1) have higher averages in the league.

In terms of numbers, Diego Godin also deserves a mention for the success rate of his tackles and aerial duels: our Uruguayan has won 79.2% of his tackles (a truly impressive statistic) and more than 64% of his aerial duels. It’s also impossible to ignore Stefan de Vrij, who has put in some excellent defensive performances as well as attacking contributions: two goals, three assists and nine key passes.

ON THE ROAD Inter have brought back 29 points from their away games this season, winning nine of the twelve games not at San Siro, drawing two and losing just one. Only Liverpool (37) and Paris Saint-Germain (31) have earned more points on the road from Europe’s Top 5 leagues this season.
