MILAN – It’s Sunday, which means another instalment of an Inter Quiz. Last time out we dealt with the subject of shots from outside the box, and today we’re focusing on the ‘keepers, saves, Handanovic and his predecessors. In collaboration with Opta, here are some questions and answers regarding stats and facts on the Nerazzurri’s numbers 1s.

1) Who is the goalkeeper with the most appearances for the Nerazzurri in Serie A in the era of three points for a win?

Samir Handanovic Handanovic has 279 Serie A appearances for Inter and is just 49 caps away from Walter Zenga (328), who’s the most capped Nerazzurri ‘keeper in the top division as well as being the eighth most capped Inter player ever in the competition. Since 1994/95, Inter’s Serie A goalkeeper ranking, by appearances, is: 1) Handanovic 279; 2) Julio Cesar 228; 3) Gianluca Pagliuca 165; 4) Francesco Toldo 148.

2) Which goalkeeper has the most appearances for Inter in continental competitions, i.e. in the Champions League and Champions Cup?

Julio CésarJulio César, with a tally of 52 matches, is the only ‘keeper to have more than 50 Nerazzurri appearances in the Champions League and Champions Cup. Following him are: Francesco Toldo 37; Giuliano Sarti 32; Ivano Bordon 14; Samir Handanovic 12.

3) Against which opponent did Samir Handanovic save his first penalty in Serie A for Inter in December 2013?

Goran Pandev Handanovic has saved ten penalties in Serie A for Inter: the first was against Pandev in the game against Napoli on 15 December 2013. The most recent was against Muriel in Inter vs. Atalanta last January.

4) Samir Handanovic also holds the record for penalties saved in Serie A from 2005/06 up to now, how many has he saved?

24This man loves saving penalties, since his time at Udinese Handanovic has shone when it comes to saving spot kicks, denying opponents 24 times from twelve yards. Behind him are: Andrea Consigli (18), Stefano Sorrentino (14), Emiliano Viviano (12), Antonio Mirante (11).

5) Samir Handanovic ended the last decade with 368 appearances in Serie A for Udinese and Inter, more than any other player. Which ‘keeper follows him in this particular ranking?

Andrea Consigli From 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2019 Handanovic was the most capped ‘keeper in Serie A with 368 appearances. Following him was Consigli with 315 caps, then the top five is completed by Stefano Sorrentino (302), Antonio Mirante (286) and Gianluigi Buffon (253). Napoli We all remember his penalty save against Ronaldinho in the 2010 Derby, but Julio Cesar saved ten for Inter overall and he twice denied Napoli players, Zalayeta and Hamsik.

7) The record for consecutive games without conceding a goal in the league for Inter is seven, in which season did this happen?

1970/71 Between January and March in 1971 (a season in which Lido Vieri and Ivano Bordon were goalkeepers), Inter kept a clean sheet for seven straight Serie A matches. This is a record that still lasts for the Nerazzurri in a single season. In the 2000’s, the best streaks are from 2004/05 and 2017/18 when the side went five consecutive games without conceding.

8) The record number of saves from an Inter goalkeeper in a single Serie A match over the last decade was ten against Roma in October 2015: how did that match end?

1-0 (Medel) 10 saves made by Handanovic and three points for Inter as the game finished 1-0: in Inter vs. Roma 2015 the record was set for number of saves without conceding for an Inter ‘keeper in a Serie A game since ‘04/05 onwards (when Opta started collecting data).
