After scoring twice against Genoa, the Belgian striker has now found the net 29 times this season, his best tally in a single campaign

GENOA - Romelu Lukaku really has made his mark this season, and Genoa know this more than anyone else. In their two encounters with the Nerazzurri this season, the Rossoblù conceded seven and failed to find the net. Of these seven goals, the Belgian striker scored four: two in the reverse fixture and two in tonight’s clash. Great goals of a similar nature, first with his head and then following a mazy run with the ball at his feet. First in June, then in December.

Lukaku’s brace in Inter’s 3-0 win meant that he broke a personal record: with 29 goals in 45 games in all competitions this season, it’s the Belgian striker’s best tally in a single campaign. Prior to this, his best season came during his first year at Manchester Uinted, when he bagged 27 goals. Furthermore, he is now third on the list when it comes to the most goals scored by an Inter player in their first season at the Club: only Istvan Nyers (26 goals in 1948/49) and Ronaldo (1997/98) are ahead of him in this respect. He’s also equalled the record for the number of away goals scored by an Inter player in a single season: 15, the tally that Nyers achieved in 1949/50.

Lukaku had the following to say when interviewed by Sky Sport after the match: “I’m happy, but as a team we can still do more. We need to finish our league campaign in the best way possible, and I always fight to help the group. We have regrets and have let too many points slip away, but we’re a young team and still need to develop. We’ll now focus on finishing the season well, starting with our two remaining league matches and then when the Europa League comes around. It won’t be easy, but we’ll work every day to win this trophy.”
