Godin: "We produced some great stuff to close the season out"

BERGAMO - Dominant. There's no other way to describe Diego Godin's performance tonight. The leader of a defence that closed the season out in style, keeping four consecutive clean sheets. The Uruguayan made some crucial contributions to thwart a persistent Atalanta attack, the highest-scoring in the league this season, and even helped the Nerazzurri to keep them scoreless, which they haven’t managed since November 2019. After the final whistle, Godin gave his thoughts to Inter TV: “We’re coming to the end of a long, hard season that has been made much harder given everything that’s been happening in the world recently: it wasn’t easy for anyone. We’ve produced some great stuff this season, particularly in defence.  We’ve conceded the fewest goals in the league, and the defensive work starts with the forwards, so the whole team can take credit. We’re pretty chuffed. We’ve grown as a side and there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

“I’d been watching Serie A from afar and I’d seen just how tough the game is here, with sides that are strong in defence and attack alike. I’ve been growing as a player throughout my time here and bit by bit I’ve been working out how I fit into this team and into the Coach’s plans. Serie A is different from La Liga: it’s a tougher league, you only need to look at the top end of the table to see that – there are so many sides separated by so few points.”

He’s now turning his thoughts to the Europa League: “I have massive respect for the Europa League because it’s offered me so much throughout my career, so much happiness, so much success. It’s a great competition because once you get to the later stages, the atmosphere is great and it really breeds a desire to win. I won it twice at Atletico, and then we won the UEFA Super Cup. We’ve got to keep on going as we are because we’ve been closing the season out brilliantly. The Europa League is our chance to get some silverware, but we'll only have a few matches to show what we can do.”
