On to the Europa League: bracket, format and rules

The Nerazzurri take on Getafe in their Round of 16 tie


MILAN - The league season was rounded off with a win against Atalanta and a second-place finish. Now though, Inter are ready to get their teeth into European action with a game against Getafe on 5 August. It'll be a rather special version of the Europa League with a pre-defined bracket (single-game ties) and games that will be played in four venues in Germany. Inter vs. Getafe takes place at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday 5 August at 21:00 CEST.

The winner of this Round of 16 tie will face either Rangers or Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the quarter-final. The Germans won 3-1 in the first leg.

ROUND OF 16

Inter vs. Getafe and Roma vs. Sevilla are the two Round of 16 ties to played as single matches, given that the first legs were not played. The other six fixtures will continue on from the first legs, which were played before lockdown.

VENUES

 Inter head to Gelsenkirchen to take on Getafe. From the quarter-finals on, all of the fixtures will be played behind closed doors in four German host venus:

- Stadion Köln, Cologne; - MSV Arena, Duisburg; - Düsseldorf Arena, Düsseldorf; - Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen.

RULES

Teams will be able to make five substitutions during three windows in a match. Changes made at half time, between full time and the start of extra time, and the break in extra time will not be counted. One further substitution is allowed during extra time.

Furthermore, it will be possible to choose from a larger squad of players: 23 instead of the usual 18, as was only previously the rule for the final.
