Inter took to the pitch in Munich with Darmian part of the three-man backline, Bellanova and Gosens on the flanks and Asllani in the heart of midfield, with Gagliardini and Correa also starting. The Nerazzurri looked bright early on, even if the playing surface was proving problematic for all the players, with frequent slips on the pitch.

As has often been the case recently, Nicolò Barella threatened in attack in the opening ten minutes. Indeed, the Italian midfielder had two attempts at goal, with his first effort being saved by Ulreich and his second being blocked by Mané’s arms. Inter appealed for a penalty and the referee went over to the monitor to have a long look, but, in the end, he decided not to give it. On balance, with these two chances plus a gilt-edged opportunity for Lautaro on the 27-minute mark, the Nerazzurri had the better of the opening half an hour, even if Kimmich was making a nuisance of himself with shots from distance. Inzaghi’s men were putting together some nice moves down the wings, and Bellanova looked particularly lively.

With El Toro having failed to convert Gosens’ low cross at the back stick, Bayern took the lead after 32 minutes: Pavard freed himself of Lautaro’s attentions and headed home a corner from the right. It was a goal that allowed the hosts to play with a real sense of calm and make the most of Coman and Mané’s pace.

Inter, however, weren't just going to accept defeat and looked for the equaliser. Gagliardini had a tame effort after pinching the ball off Correa's toes in the box, while Acerbi had a goal ruled out for offside. Plenty of changes were made and one substitute doubled the Germans' advantage, namely Choupo-Moting, who let fly with an unstoppable right-footed strike that finished in the top corner (72'). Following Bayern's second, Inzaghi sent on Valentin Carboni for his Champions League debut.

At this point, the match was virtually over as a contest. That was despite the best efforts of Dzeko, who was excellent following his introduction on the hour mark. The Bosnian came close to grabbing a consolation after 93 minutes, but Ulreich made a fine stop to thwart him.

It was Inter's final effort in a game that was meaningless in terms of the group standings but which saw Bayern reaffirm their dominance. The Nerazzurri, however, showed many promising signs and will now look ahead to their next league fixture against Juventus.
