The words of the German defender and Piotr Zielinski after the 2-1 victory against Genoa at the Ferraris

Inter saw off Genoa with a display of intensity and quality, showing their ability to dominate and suffer against a tough opponent. The three points further underline the Nerazzurri’s credentials, leaving them top of the table with the league’s most potent attack after a match decided by goals from Bisseck and the division’s leading scorer, Lautaro Martínez.

With six goals, Inter’s number 31 is the highest-scoring central defender in Serie A since his debut in the competition in the 2023/24 season, level with Federico Gatti, Gianluca Mancini and Lucas Martínez Quarta. Below are his post-match comments, along with those of Zieliński:

“Not every match is straightforward. We knew playing here would be tough, but we did well even though we had to suffer at times, and we’re happy with the win. The goal? It finally came. I always want to help the team score, and today I’m really pleased it was me, even if the most important thing is the victory. This season I’d already tried shooting with my left foot, even against Liverpool. Today it worked, but what mattered was winning. We suffered a bit, but sometimes you have to win like that. I’m not thinking about the World Cup right now, even if I hope for it. My focus is on helping the team, and today things went well. The goal was a mix of skill and luck, and I’m glad I helped the team. Scoring early is always nice, though we knew the opponent would be difficult. We dominated the game, it’s just a shame about the goal we conceded. We still have room to improve, but for tonight we’re happy.”

“It’s never easy to win here. We showed character, quality and grit, and came away with three very important points. After the Champions League defeat it was crucial to respond, to bounce back and keep our momentum going in the league, and that’s exactly what we did. The key is feeling good, and here everyone feels important. I’m calm and able to play my game, and my teammates always help me out because we’re a really strong side. This was a win built on character. We switched off for their goal, but we did well not to take any further risks and to see the game out for a fundamental victory. Being top is always nice, but there are still so many matches to play. We need consistency if we want to win as many games as possible. We have everything it takes to finish the season in first place, but there’s a long way to go. Bisseck’s goal? I was around the edge of the box waiting for the ball — if he scores like that, we’re all happy. Since joining Inter I’ve never really been at 100%, with injuries and a lack of continuity, so I couldn’t always show my best. But I stayed calm and knew this season I’d be able to show my qualities, so I thank the coach for the trust he’s shown in me. It’s always great to see Inter at the top, but we know there’s a lot of hard work ahead. Today was an opportunity we couldn’t afford to miss, and we took a big win on a very tough ground.”
