Genoa vs. Inter, the complete guide
Team
— 6 hours agoCristian Chivu's men are preparing to travel to Marassi, where they take on Genoa at 18:00 CET on Sunday 14 December. The Nerazzurri go into the game against the Ligurian out fit on 30 points in third place, one point behind joint leaders AC Milan and Napoli. This is a fixture with a rich history, and the stats tend to favour Inter in a meeting between two of the most traditional clubs in Serie A.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
The history between Genoa and Inter extends back over a century. The two sides have met on 114 occasions in the top flight of Italian football: Inter have won 60, the Rossoblù have won 22, and there have been 32 draws.
Recent years have seen Inter in the ascendancy. In their last twelve league games against Genoa, the Nerazzurri have won nine and drawn three. The goalscoring figures are even more significant: Inter have scored in eleven of those twelve matches (the only exception is the goalless draw on 25 February 2022). In this period, the Nerazzurri have scored 31 goals, an average of 2.6 per game, proof of the Nerazzurri's output in attack against the Grifone.
INTER'S STATS
Inter go into matchday 15 fresh from making history. For the second time in their history, after 2022/23, the Nerazzurri have not drawn a single match in the first 14 games of the season (W10, L4). The away record reads four wins from five games, and should the Nerazzurri win in Genoa, they would be the first Serie A side to win at least five of the first six away matches of the season in three consecutive campaigns.
Against Como, the Nerazzurri netted their fourth goal from a corner in the league this season; in Europe's Top-5 leagues, only Lens (9) and Arsenal (8) have done better. Inter tend to dominate possession and territory. In fact, no other team has completed more passes in the opposition half (3,351) or taken as many touches in the opposition penalty area (476). The Nerazzurri score 2.29 goals per game, a league high, vastly superior to the Serie A average of 1.18.
Inter's differential between shots attempted and conceded (+112) is the highest in Serie A, far ahead of Juventus on +73, the next-best team in this particular stat. Aggression and quality are trademarks of this Inter side. They have taken 22 shots and scored five goals straight from offensive recoveries. Furthermore, they have interrupted their opposition's build-up on 170 occasions, also a league high. Their balance between pressing and possession is reflected in their 60 sequences of at least ten passes that finished with a shot or entering into the box, yet another Serie A best so far this season.
DIMARCO, KING OF ASSISTS
The Nerazzurri's left-back continues to be one of the top performers in Serie A this season. He has the most chances created in the league, with 36 (one ahead of Aarón Martín). His five assists also put him at the top of that particular leaderboard alongside Nico Paz.
Dimarco is one of just six players in Europe's Top-5 leagues to have provided at least five assists in each of the last three seasons. That stat has made history: he is only the second defender to achieve the aforementioned feat since Opta records began (2004/05). The only other defender to have done this is Inter legend Maicon, who managed it for five campaigns in a row.
BASTONI'S DISTRIBUTION
Alessandro Bastoni is one of the key players in Inter's build-up. Only Giovanni Di Lorenzo (693) has been involved in more passing sequences than the Inter defender (655) this season. This stat is proof is his importance on the ball, as well as his supreme vision and impact on how the Nerazzurri play out from the back.
OUR OPPOSITION: GENOA
Since Daniele De Rossi took charge, Genoa have been one of the most in-form teams in the league. The Ligurian side are currently in 14th place on 14 points, with three wins and five draws to their name. They have scored 15 goals and conceded 21. They have taken eleven points from their last five outings in Serie A. Under interim head coach Domenico Criscito, they beat Sassuolo 2-1. Since then, following the arrival of De Rossi, the Grifone drew 2-2 with Fiorentina and 3-3 with Cagliari, followed by two 2-1 victories, over Verona and Udinese. For the game against Inter, De Rossi is predicted to go with a 3-5-2 formation: Leali in goal, a back three of Marcandalli, Otoa and Vasquez, Norton-Cuffy, Thorsby, Frendrup, Malinovskyi and Martin in midfield, and a strike partnership formed of Vitinha and Colombo.
