Recent history between Inter and Torino has favoured the Nerazzurri. Inter have won twelve of the last 13 official meetings with the Granata, all played in Serie A, with just one draw, breaking the long winning streak that includes victories in each of the last seven encounters.
However, the two sides will be meeting outside the league for the first time in 35 years. Their most recent non-league clash dates back to January 23, 1991, in the Coppa Italia round of 16, when Emiliano Mondonico’s Torino knocked out Giovanni Trapattoni’s Inter thanks to a 1-0 win in the second leg, after Inter had won the first leg 2-1.
This will be the 16th Coppa Italia meeting between Inter and Torino. Overall, Torino hold the edge with eight wins to Inter’s five, along with two draws. Looking specifically at home fixtures, after losing their first two Coppa Italia home matches against Torino between 1939 and 1968, Inter went on to win each of the next five, scoring eight goals and conceding just one.
More generally, recent home form leaves little room for doubt: Inter have won their last seven home matches against Torino, scoring 19 goals and conceding only five.
INTER'S FORM
In recent years, the Coppa Italia has become a particularly familiar competition for the Nerazzurri. Since the 2019/20 season, Inter have reached the semi-finals in five of the last six editions of the tournament, missing out only in 2023/24.
Their record in the quarter-finals is also extremely strong: Inter have won each of their last five matches at this stage of the competition, scoring nine goals and conceding just two, while keeping clean sheets in the three most recent games.
Chivu’s side also continue to stand out for the depth and effectiveness of their attacking options. This season, Inter have scored 14 goals from outside the box across all competitions, at least five more than any other Serie A team. The Nerazzurri are also the league’s top-scoring side and the team with the most headed goals, with 10 in total, two of which came against Torino.
THURAM AND TORINO
Torino are Marcus Thuram’s favorite opponent since he began playing in Europe’s top five leagues. The French forward has scored six goals in four matches against the Granata, all in Serie A, including his only hat-trick in official matches for Inter, on October 5, 2024 at the Meazza.
Thuram has also already made his mark in the Coppa Italia: he has scored two goals in three appearances in the competition, all played at home, with both goals coming in the round of 16 this season against Venezia.
BASTONI AND DIMARCO: ADDITIONAL ATTACKING OPTIONS
Federico Dimarco and Alessandro Bastoni are also key figures for Inter in attack. With 14 goal contributions between goals and assists, and Bastoni with eight, they are the two Serie A defenders who have been involved in the most goals this season across all competitions.
The Nerazzurri centre-back, in particular, has a special connection with Torino: in his last three league appearances against the Granata, he has been directly involved in four goals (one goal and three assists) after failing to register a direct goal contribution in his first eleven matches against this opponent. He has only recorded the same number of assists across all competitions against Lazio.
RELIABLE ZIELINSKI
Piotr Zielinski is impressing with his ability to score from long range. Three out of his four goals this Serie A season have come from outside the box. Among players with at least four goals across Europe’s top five leagues, no one has a higher percentage of goals scored from distance than Zielinski, at 75%.
THE OPPONENT: TORINO
Torino head to San Siro after knocking Roma out in the round of 16, after a dramatic 3-2 away win, decided in the 90th minute by İlkhan’s goal. The Granata began their Coppa Italia campaign with a 1-0 win over Modena in the round of 32, before eliminating Pisa by the same scoreline in the following round.
Baroni’s side are going through a difficult spell. They have lost four of their last five Serie A matches, with their only win coming in their most recent game against Lecce (1-0). The defeats came against Udinese, Atalanta, Roma, and Como. In the league, Torino sit 13th with 26 points, having recorded seven wins and five draw.
