San Siro’s roar, El Toro’s instinct: Inter vs. Napoli in five moments

There are nights when the best moments are born of instinct. A feeling, an intuition that events might unfold a certain way, followed by the decision to trust it and go with your gut. When Napoli scored their second goal, it might have been easy to lose faith, but neither the team nor San Siro wavered for a single second. The comeback was there for the taking.

BISSECK EVERYWHERE

At the other end, he nearly produced a number ten’s finish of his own: after receiving the ball in the box, he nutmegged his marker and unleashed a powerful left-footed strike that flew narrowly wide. Yann was irrepressible, and San Siro could scarcely believe its eyes.

THE ROAR OF SAN SIRO

Rasmus Hojlund’s left-footed strike found the bottom corner to Martinez’s right (53’), just three minutes after Politano’s opener. It was a brutal double blow after a first half packed with chances and played at relentless intensity. Inter now had a mountain to climb against a strong and determined Napoli side. Yet San Siro was alive. The scoreboard read Inter 0-2 Napoli, but the Nerazzurri faithful knew there was still a long way to go at the Meazza. If anything, the noise grew louder. Zielinski crossed from the right towards the back post, where Dimarco timed his run perfectly and volleyed the ball back across goal with his left foot. Lautaro was waiting, anticipating the cross before anyone else and beating Rrahmani to the ball to finish into an empty net. Three touches were all it took to breach Napoli’s wall. The captain grabbed the ball from the net, roused San Siro and led the charge. The game was alive again. Anything was possible.

THURAM’S HEADER

While both teams were still in the dressing rooms at half-time, Marcus Thuram was already back out on the pitch without a bib, completing his warm-up before coming on. His expression was focused; he was determined to make an impact and celebrate at San Siro again. The last time he had done so was on 3 May, on Scudetto night.

He entered the action at the start of the second half and, within minutes, watched Napoli score twice. But when Lautaro immediately pulled one back, Marcus was fired up. Determined to help the team, he used his physical strength to do battle first with Marin and then with Badiashile, roaming across the entire front line and constantly looking for space. He sent a header crashing against the post but kept believing. His reward arrived in the 82nd minute, bringing back the feeling every striker lives for.

Carlos Augusto crossed from the left and Tikus timed his leap perfectly, rising above Badiashile and directing a header into the bottom corner to Meret’s right. San Siro went wild, and Thuram unleashed a furious celebration. He raced towards the Curva with eyes wide, muscles tensed and teeth clenched, overcome with adrenaline. Then came his roar to the entire stadium: “Now let’s go and win it!” Welcome back, Marcus.

THE FINAL FRENZY

Back to instinct, then. Once the score reached 2-2, all structure disappeared and every possible outcome was suddenly on the table. Thuram fired over from a promising position, and Neres did the same at the other end. Both teams were stretched, with every attack threatening to produce another chance.

San Siro held its breath when Anguissa met Lucca’s volley from point-blank range but failed to find the unguarded net. It was a sign, a moment that stirred something in both the team and the Nerazzurri faithful. There was still all of stoppage time to find a winner, and the stadium was at boiling point.
