— Aug 12th 2025Inter beat Monza on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time: post-match comments from Pio Esposito, scorer of the Nerazzurri's second goal, and Carlos Augusto
Inter secured their third friendly win as they continue to build momentum ahead of the 2025/26 season. At the U-Power Stadium, Birindelli’s own goal from a Dimarco cross cancelled out Ciurria’s opener. Then, after Pio Esposito’s backheel had put the Nerazzurri ahead, Azzi equalised late on. The match was then decided by a penalty shootout, with Chivu’s side emerging victorious.
There were encouraging signs from the team, plus a brilliant finish from the Nerazzurri forward, who, together with Carlos Augusto, shared his thoughts on the game.
“Tonight’s goal was a fantastic feeling. I’m happy we managed to win, even if it came down to penalties: it helps build the winning mentality we want to create. The first games are always the hardest; they’re needed to get back into rhythm, but we did well. I play alongside some incredibly strong players from whom I can learn every day. My bond with Chivu? There’s a lot of gratitude and respect – it’s a special connection. We’ve grown together, him as a coach, me as a player; it’s a great story. What kind of Inter side is taking shape? This is a team that’s working hard and, as always, aiming to win.”
Pio Esposito
“These matches are important to be ready for the start of the season and to get some minutes in our legs. It was a great test, and we started well, focusing on being aggressive and getting the ball forward quickly – exactly what the coach is asking for. Our legs aren’t at 100% yet, but we’ll be ready for our first competitive match. I like being able to play in two positions and help the team. We are Inter, and every season we have to fight to win every competition. Last season didn’t go the way we wanted, but we want to win and will do everything possible to make it happen. Chivu is proving to be very capable. He knows how to bring the team together, and we’re training really well with the aim of enjoying a strong season.”
