— 3 hours agoThe Nerazzurri finish the year with a win, as they stay top of the league: here's all you need to know about the game in Bergamo
It was the best possible end to 2025. Inter finished the calendar year with an important win in a big game, as they beat Atalanta at the New Balance Arena. The cold in Bergamo didn't stop Inter's charge in the league, as the Nerazzurri put on a festive feat of determined and spirited football. Yet another Lautaro Martinez goal won the day for Inter. The three points mean that Chivu's side will finish 2025 top of the Serie A table on 36 points, one more than AC Milan and two more than Napoli. The victory over Atalanta also provided us with some interesting stats, which tell the tale of the Nerazzurri's performance.
TRADITIONS, AWAY DAYS AND DEFENCE
In recent years, Inter have had a positive record against Atalanta. This win to conclude 2025 was the Nerazzurri's seventh in a row against La Dea in Serie A, with an aggregate scoreline of 18-5. In order to find a longer winning run, we have to go back to an eight-game streak between 1964 and 1967. Furthermore, Inter's last four wins have been clean sheets, which is a first since the period between 1965 and 1967 (four wins with four clean sheets as part of that aforementioned eight-game run). Inter are the team to have won the most games (71) and scored the most goals (233) against Atalanta in Serie A.
For the second time since Cristian Chivu's arrival in the dug-out, the Nerazzurri have won four consecutive Serie A matches (against Pisa, Como, Genoa and Atalanta). In addition, the victory in Bergamo was Inter's fourth in a row away from home in the league, after wins in Verona, Pisa and Genoa. This is the first time that the Nerazzurri have been on such a run since an eight-game streak between September 2024 and January 2025.
Against Atalanta, Chivu's men played brilliantly in defence, as they kept a clean sheet for the eighth time in Serie A this season. Only Lazio (9) have more, while AC Milan have also kept eight. Inter didn't concede a goal, and they never looked like doing so. In fact, they didn't allow Atalanta a single shot on target. This is the second time that Inter's opposition have failed to register a shot on goal this season, after Cagliari 0-2 Inter on 27 September. This season, the only other Serie A teams to have not conceded a shot on target in two different matches are Genoa and Udinese.
LAUTARO'S GOAL, PIO'S ASSIST
With his goal against La Dea, Lautaro Martinez extended his red-hot run of form. The Nerazzurri's captain has scored in each of Inter's four straight wins in Serie A for a total of five goals (brace against Pisa, one against Como, Genoa and Atalanta). El Toro has scored in four straight league matches in a calendar year for the first time since November-December 2021, when he netted in five consecutive games. Lautaro has a good overall record against Atalanta, having scored eight goals and provided two assists against the Bergamaschi in the league (he only has a better record against Cagliari, 13). His goal at the New Balance Arena sees him finish the calendar year top of the Serie A scoring charts on nine goals in the current campaign. He is also the highest scorer in the Italian top flight in the calendar year of 2025 with 15 goals, level with Bologna's Orsolini. In total, El Toro scored 30 goals in 2025, and he reached 166 in total for Inter, only five fewer than Roberto Boninsegna, the Nerazzurri's third-highest goalscorer of all time.
Lautaro's goal against Atalanta came from a Pio Esposito assist, who made full use of his first touch after coming on in the 64th minute. Inter's number 94 registered his second assist in Serie A this season, after setting up El Toro against Pisa. Esposito, born on 28 June 2005, is the youngest Italian player with at least two assists in the league this season.
THE NERAZZURRI IN 2025
Inter's 2025 concluded with a win, which saw the Nerazzurri retain their hold on first place in Serie A. The victory over Atalanta was their 39th in all competitions in the calendar year (equalling their total in 2023, and worse only than the 40 in 2005).
The last Serie A game in a calendar year has often been kind to the Nerazzurri, who have ended with a win on seven occasions in the last eight seasons (one draw).
