INTERCONTINENTAL CUP 1965
It is 15 September 1965 at the Estadio La Doble Visera in Avellaneda, Argentina. For the second consecutive year, Helenio Herrera's Inter are crowned world champions. They achieve the feat after a hard-fought 0–0 draw against Independiente, the same side they had faced in a three-match showdown the previous year. In 1964, a playoff in Madrid had been required to decide the winners, with Mario Corso's 110th-minute goal securing Inter's first Intercontinental Cup triumph. In 1965, Inter arrived in Avellaneda with the confidence of a commanding 3–0 victory at San Siro. It had been a flawless performance, made unforgettable by Peiró's early opener and two goals from Mazzola—one with a header and the other an acrobatic bicycle kick. Inter refused to back down. Independiente pressed relentlessly, but time and again they were denied by the Nerazzurri's resolute defence. A shot that struck the crossbar in the closing stages finally extinguished the Argentinians' hopes. For the second year in a row, Inter stood on top of the world, with captain Armando Picchi lifting the Intercontinental Cup and bringing it back to Milan. A chapter of history that became legend—one written 55 years ago.
