MILAN – “Inter is the Club of my life because I had the privilege to be born an Inter fan, to play in all the youth teams, to be a ball boy, I was lucky enough to go into the Curva and to wear this shirt 473 times.”
Forever an Inter fan, from head to toe. Walter Zenga’s story is one that oozes love for football and Inter: an intertwining of talent, fate and passion. Football was at the centre of everything for him since he was a kid, from his first steps in the courtyard to wearing the Macallesi shirt, which only took one year, because in 1971 fate knocked on his door: Walter entered the world of Inter.
So began that young Nerazzurri’s adventure, with seven years of forming a combination of technique, talent, charisma and courage that has made generations of Nerazzurri fall in love. His dedication in training was spurred on by his life as a fan, as a ball boy and by the matches he watched at San Siro.
He spent four seasons away before returning in 1982, when he spent a year learning from Bordon before getting an opportunity to make his first-team debut. Zenga grew up playing football and he played the goalkeeper’s role in a unique way: putting on a show, diving between the sticks, exciting the fans and inspiring the team, this the legend of ‘Spiderman’ was born. He wore his beloved shirt on 473 occasions, winning the ‘Scudetto dei Record’ in 1989, as well as one Italian Super Cup and the UEFA Cup twice: in the 1990/91 season as well as on 11 May 1994 at the end of an unforgettable final against Salzburg, a night when he showed all his quality and heart on the pitch.
However, his Nerazzurri history didn’t end there, 24 years later in 2018, he became the first ‘keeper to enter the Nerazzurri Hall of Fame, permanently cementing his bond with Inter: “A childhood dream that became reality. I used to go to the stadium just to watch Inter, this award is an incredible feeling!”
Today, ‘Spiderman’ turns 60 and FC Internazionale Milano and all our fans worldwide send their best wishes.
