VECINO: "THERE’S REAL ENTHUSIASM AHEAD OF THE NEW SEASON"

The Uruguayan midfielder has linked up with his team-mates in Appiano Gentile

APPIANO GENTILE – Matias Vecino is back in Italy and back at the Suning Training Centre after taking a well-earned rest following his Copa America campaign with Uruguay earlier in the summer.

The midfielder was plagued by injury problems last season, but he is now looking forward to the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign.

“I’m happy to be back here and to see my team-mates, who I’ve not spent time with in a long while,” Vecino told Inter TV. “There’s real enthusiasm and motivation ahead of the new season.”

Vecino revealed that he spoke to new Inter boss Simone Inzaghi while still in South America.

“I spoke to Inzaghi when I was Uruguay – I felt his enthusiasm and now we have the chance to get to know each other better,” he said. “I was out for a long time last season due to injury, but now I’m raring to go to try to help us repeat the wonderful season we had last year. The aim is to find some consistency in terms of my fitness and in terms of playing time – I really can’t wait for the season to begin.”

The Uruguayan also said that his action for the national team at the Copa America helped him regain match fitness ahead of the Serie A campaign.

“When you come back after a long injury lay-off, you try to find that consistency straight away so my time with the national team definitely helped in terms of finding my rhythm,” said Vecino. “Obviously it was disappointing to get knocked out on penalties, but I was delighted for Lautaro [Martinez], who played a key role in [Argentina’s] win.”
