Chivu: "We gave everything but needed to be more clinical in front of goal"

— Jun 18th 2025The thoughts of the Nerazzurri head coach following Inter's 1-1 draw with Monterrey in their Club World Cup opener
Inter's Club World Cup journey has begun with a draw: it finished 1-1 between the Nerazzurri and Monterrey at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles on matchday 1 in Group E. Both goals arrived in the first half, with Lautaro Martinez's finish cancelling out Sergio Ramos' header. This is what Cristian Chivu had to say after the game:
“The first half was positive: even though we fell behind, we caused them problems with our movement and rotations. In the second half, we were a bit slow in possession, though we still created a few chances. What we lacked was a clinical edge in front of goal. We were exposed at times in transition, where they were particularly strong. We needed to get the ball forward more quickly and move it faster, but the players gave everything. Mkhitaryan behind the striker? We need to try to keep on developing new solutions and be ready for our upcoming matches. Luis Henrique can do better, but it’s worth remembering he’s not fully fit yet and he’s only had two training sessions with us. That said, I liked his performance. He has character, possesses good technique and is brave in one-on-one situations. Sebastiano Esposito also put in a solid performance. It wasn’t easy facing a low block that then often tried to catch us offside.”
